I had links for you on Wednesday. I have videos for you today. When you have a few minutes check out my faves from the week:
1. This has gone viral big time. I saw it Wednesday morning when the views were still under 100K. My favorite Super Bowl video. Budweiser wins again this year with the #BestBuds ad. The romance writer in me hopes the horse trainer gets the girl in the next one!
2. This is another Super Bowl ad. You won't be misty-eyed or have your heart sigh with this one, but you may get a chuckle. This Chevy ad makes me think of the Bar V5 dude ranch in my novella Home For Christmas! Enjoy!
3. This one features Derrick Coleman, a football player for the Seattle Seahawks, who is playing in the Super Bowl. He's deaf and paid a visit to two fans in New Jersey. Such a class act! You can also watch the KOMO news clip here.
4. This video is a PSA for wine lovers, a helpful hint on what to do if you are without a wine opener. I have no idea if this works, but I'm curious enough to try it. Though not with an expensive bottle!
5. The final video brought tears to my eyes. It's a Guinness about two sisters who have competed for the US in the winter Olympics. So worth a watch. The problem is YouTube was pulling it due to some Olympic rules about ads from non-sponsors. I can't embed it, but here's the link to the AdWeek article where I watched it. I hope they can keep the video live somehow.
Have a great Friday and weekend!

Super Bowl Sad Day
My team lost. Rose's team won. That about sums up Super Bowl Sunday for me.
I did think the meme to the left was hilarious. Much funnier than some of the commercials shown during the game.
I did like a few of the ads: the Budweiser one that I posted here on Saturday is still my favorite. I also liked the Paul Harvey "Farmer" for the Dodge Ram Truck. I must admit I got a little teary eyed over the Jeep-USO commercial. Very touching and I couldn't stop thinking about our adopted service member being separated from his family.
Part of the reason I wasn't into the game was my sadness over the murder of former Navy SEAL and American Sniper Chris Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield. Chris is the NYT Bestselling author of American Sniper. I'd learned about Chris through SOFREP. They have a great video series called Inside the Team Room where three former SEALS talk about their experiences pre-during-post teams.
Chris Kyle was larger than life, but also humble. When you listened to an interview or show or read something he wrote, it was like talking to a friend. Some of the people on SOFREP were fortunate to know Chris. Many of us hadn't met him yet you still felt like you knew him because he was so open about things. If you're at all interested in learning more about SOF, especially SEALs, check out the episodes.
During one show, Chris talked about doing more to help service members. I can't remember exactly what he said (and with lots of episodes I don't have time to rewatch them all while on deadline) but the doing more part resonated with me. It spurred me to find a way to do more than just say "Thanks for your service" when I see a service member or veteran somewhere. That's how I discovered Soldiers' Angels, an organization that helps soldiers, wounded warriors, veterans and families. It's been a wonderful experience for my entire family. More than once I started writing an email to thank Chris only to be interrupted. I really wish I'd just taken the time to thank him before because now it's too late.
There's a lovely tribute written by Eric Davis, Chris Kyle's sniper instructor and friend. Click here to read the post at SOFREP.
Chris Kyle not only served our country, he wanted to give back after leaving active duty. He helped numerous veterans. He helped law enforcement. He helped civilians.
He sure helped me and my family realize we could do a little something ourselves, far away from the battles in Afghanistan being fought in Operation Enduring Freedom. If not for Chris Kyle, I would never have thought about joining a group like Soldiers' Angels. It just wasn't on my radar screen. I'm so glad and thankful it is now!
RIP Chris Kyle, a true hero and a great American. I regret not saying it before, but I'll say it now. Thank you for your service and keeping us safe and getting us involved. Your family, friends and teammates are in our prayers.

Rose Bowl Recap

I caught the first flight out of PDX to San Jose, CA. It was the only way to keep the plane fare reasonable. My best friend from college's husband and her 14 year old son picked me up. I've known D's hubby for, gosh, twenty-five years, longer than I've known my own hubby! We've done roadtrips (skiing in Tahoe) as well as a few weekends in Vegas over the years. Needless to say the drive to LA went quick while we caught up on stuff we don't post on Facebook! We arrived around two o'clock.
After a quick hello to my best friend Deb, her oldest son, a friend of his from Denver (who happens to be the son of a writing friend of mine that Deb and I didn't realize we shared for the longest time), my friend's aunt who we were staying with, we set off for the beach. It's walking distance. This gave Deb, her aunt and I a chance to catch up sans boys. This was the first time I'd seen my friend since 2008. It had been even longer since I'd seen her aunt who we used to visit so we could hang at the beach in our twenties. The sun was shining with blue skies overhead, a lovely day for a stroll.
Back at the house, Deb's younger brother, who graduated from Stanford, was there with his wife and two kids. All the way from Atlanta! We caught up for a bit, had some snacks, then it was time for me to go to Mass. New Years Day is also the Solemnity of Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation. Fortunately I found a church approx. 20 minutes away that had a vigil Mass on New Year's Day since I knew the 1st was going to be an early and busy day in Pasadena. Deb dropped me off. I told Mass would be about an hour.
The church was nice. It wasn't very crowded, and the Mass went quickly. So fast I wondered if it would count! As soon as the priest walked out, I texted Deb. No reply. I figured that meant she was still showering so I sent a text to her husband. He said someone would leave shortly.
I moved from where I was sitting to near the side door so I could see when they pulled into the parking lot. People were filing out of the church pretty quickly. Soon there were only a couple left. A man came up to me. I told him I was waiting for a ride. He told me he needed to turn out the lights and wanted to warn me it would be pitch black in the church. No worries, I told him. He asked me to make sure the doors were shut and locked when I left. I assured him they would be.
A minute later the church went pitch black. It was...weird. And I must admit, a little disconcerting. I couldn't see the Sanctuary Lamp. I'd arrived only a few minutes before Mass began so really hadn't had time to check out the church. There was a fountain with the baptismal font so I could hear running water. I also heard every creak and sound the building made. My writer brain (aka overactive imagination) took over. Let's just say if I ever want to write a murder mystery set in a Catholic church I have a plot. I will admit I was happy to see a pair of headlights pull into the parking lot!
Back at the house, more people arrived. Deb's aunt made dinner for fifteen of us! A fun way to bring in 2013!
We were up early and parked at the Rose Bowl a little after nine the next morning. People were already tailgating. Deb wanted to see if we could catch some of the parade (Seeing one float was her goal!) so we headed off toward the parade route. It was a long walk in shoes not really made for walking at a fast pace, but we found a spot where we caught several floats, bands and people on horses. The best part was a total surprise—the B2 bomber flew overhead. It was incredible and so quiet!
In the LA area you never know who you're going to run into!
Look who I met!
The stormtrooper even let me hold his blaster! Very cool moment for this Star Wars fangirl.

You'd think with all those people you'd bump into folks you know. Not us. Fortunately we'd exchanged numbers with those we'd hope to hang out with and managed to find each other.
Two friends who I knew all four years at Stanford and are still good friends didn't have tix to the football game, but came to the tailgate to hang out with me. Isn't that the sweetest thing?
I loved the crackling with excitement and anticipation inside the stadium. People were so psyched! All of us included. We were in the cheap seats, but they turned out to be pretty good, especially with all the scoring happening in our end zone.
This is the shot I took from my seat while the teams were warming up.
The bands performed, then the LSJUMB played the Star Spangled Banner. It was the same rendition we used when I was a member. (That's how I became friends with Deb. We were both in the band.) The best part was when the B2 bomber flew overhead again, while fireworks shot up! So cool!
Here's a video I found on YouTube of the flyover part...
The game was even more fun, cheering on our Cardinal, high-fiving each other, winning!

We, like most other Stanford fans, hung around to watch the trophy presentation and cheer more for our team.
The team ran over to our endzone. Helmets and arms in the air! A really fun moment!

| Our Stanford crew at the game! |
I think we all tumbled into bed that night. I had an eight o'clock flight the next morning and was not happy when the alarm went off. But it was worth it. And I'm hoping next year Stanford makes another bowl game. Because I want to go!

As You Wish
Total awesomeness from BuzzFeed. You've got to see the ESPN NFL Show with all the references to The Princess Bride. Football and fairytales? Inconceivable! You can watch it here.
Hope you have a great Thursday. A lot going on here with mine. Cannot wait for a little down time!

Happy Monday!

Given the #1 commercial yesterday seems to be one about a cat-killing-Doritos-bribing dog, I thought this seemed like a good LOLcat to use today! If you're curious about what the "experts" had to say about the various ads, this article is from USA Today and is titled "Super Bowl ads go to the dogs." I thought the Chevy truck commercial about the end of the world was clever, but Ford didn't think so and sent a letter to NBC and GM asking the ad be pulled.
We were all happy by the games outcome. Finn and I missed the first two quarters due to his futsal game then the drive to my parents' house afterwards, but the second half made up for what we didn't see. After all the game hoopla, the kidlets and I watched The Voice and really enjoyed it. Some great talent on that show. But I was tired on the long drive home!
I'm fighting some sort of cold/bug, but I have a lot to get done so I'd better get started. Happy Monday!

Super Bowl Sunday
see more Lolcats and funny pictures
I just can't get too excited about today's Super Bowl. I will be rooting for the New York Giants only because of hubby and because they are a NFC team like my beloved 49ers. Since I could care less about the game, I'm hoping for good commercials. Of course, it seems like many of them have already premiered on-line. Though I'll miss the first half at least due to my son's fustal game.
Will you be watching the game? Who are you rooting for?
I'll leave you with this...

Can do it!

This is my motto for the week when it comes to writing and everything else. We'll see how I do!
Did you watch the Super Bowl? I was happy the Green Packers won. I enjoyed the commercials. VW Darth Vader, the Bridgestone Beaver and the truck save Timmy were some of my faves. What about you?

Super Bowl Sunday

Today's the big day! The game. The commercials. A new Glee.
Hubby is a Jets fan so he's a little disappointed they aren't there today. But he'll be rooting for the Green Bay Packers.
His brother even sent him a cheese head top hat to wear during the game. The kidlets have been having fun with it. We tried to stick Yoda inside it for a pic, but that didn't work too well.
The Star Wars ad I posted a couple of days ago will be shown. It sounds like there may be a few good ones this year. I'll be watching the commercials closer than the game to tell the truth. I'll probably be writing, too.
What about you? Are you rooting for one team over the other? Who do you hope wins? And any commercials you're especially looking forward to?

Go Cardinal!
Tonight, Stanford plays Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. I can't wait to watch the game!
When I was at Stanford, I never missed a football game. I even traveled to a few away games since I was in the band. So much fun! Here's an article from the Miami Herald about the Incomparable Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band aka LSJUMB.
Have you been watching any college football this holiday season? I haven't, but I'm counting down time until kickoff tonight!

Super Sunday

I didn't move a lot yesterday. I parked myself in a recliner at my parents' house with my proposal. I wrote and watched the Super Bowl with my family. Oh, and ate. My dad bought one of those large Subway sandwiches, made his famous salsa and also made sure we wouldn't run out of his homemade jerky. My mom's been back east with my Aunt and Uncle for a couple of weeks, and my dad's getting a little lonely. How do I know? He drove up to our house on Thursday to spend the day with us!
As for the game, I was happy the Saints was. Nothing against the Colts, but we wanted the Jets to win so New Orleans was due. I also like Drew Brees. Was there anything cuter than him gazing at his one year old son after their game? So sweet!
The commercials were a bit disappointing to me. Talking babies are just plain stupid (and so not fresh), IMHO. All those man/lost manhood commercials just didn't cut it for me. I did think the google.com one was clever since the search terms told a story. And a couple others did make me laugh, but I can't remember which ones at the moment.
Did you watch the game? What did you think about the game and the ads?
