Oops!

Our vacation in Bend got cut short when we ran out of Finn's antibiotics. Hubby didn't back enough. Oops!

We still had a lovely time staying at my friend Tiffany's gorgeous house. We hiked, swam, ate and relaxed under the clear blue skies. I also got some writing done! A great time though I really wish we were still there!

What did you do this weekend?

A Color and Cut

My search for a hair stylist led me to Blades Hair Studio in NW Portland yesterday. I found Blades via a google search. Initially, the very out there/edgy photos on the website turned me off, but after the name kept coming up again and again, I decided to check them out. The reviews on City Search were enough to take me back to the website where I found a very cool heart with scissors logo, a hair only salon with employees (not each hair designer owning their own station), a parking lot for clients and a no tipping policy. The website says, "Do you tip your dentist?"

This is Mabel. She belongs to Blades' owner, David. She's the official greeter along with Janet who makes appointments and runs the business portion of the salon. Making an appointment was super easy. I told Janet my hair problems, and she thought Gina would be a good fit for me. When I arrived I was given a parking pass for the lot and when I returned a cup of peppermint tea. I was impressed by the hospitality and friendliness of everyone at the studio. The day before, I had asked if it was okay to bring my camera so I could blog about my visit. Janet offered to take pictures so a big thank you to her since I couldn't have taken them myself!

Gina and I talked for a long time about my hair. I told her about the bad highlights last year, the subsequent rinses to tone down the blond and my finally giving up and resorting to a ponytail. I explained how I went to a new salon in June because of my hand and walked out with the exact same haircut I've had for years. She told me how the reason I kept getting bobs is because the cut is perfect for the shape of my face. She said the problem was the length. She thought a shorter, layered bob with the front angled would open my face and work well without going to a super short style like hers.

Gina wanted to start with highlights. She brought out samples. They looked more caramel than blond. Her goal was to make them look natural. I was all for that. She also said my normal hair color were good low lights. Yay! No dark chocolate strands anymore! She thought most if not all of the leftover blond streaks would be gone by the time she cut my hair. Huge sigh of relief on my part.

Mabel is not only the official greeter, she's also the official napper! She goes from chair to chair. When I was having my hair washed she came up to my feet. She might look a little intimidating to some at first glance, but she's a total sweetheart.

After the highlights were put in, it was time for the cut. I'm blind without my glasses so all I could really see where chunks of hair dropping onto the cape. My head felt a lot lighter with all the hair coming off. She used a nifty razor cutter to do the front and sides, then had me try on my glasses to make sure the pieces of hair would be in the way.

I left my glasses on so I could see how Gina styled the hair. She used a round brush and blow dryer. She also told me how to make it look less bob-like if I wanted.

Here's the final result...

Not all that different, but my family loves it. My daughters squealed with delight when I walked into the house. Even my son commented on it! Hubby is happy.

I really love the color. The cut is still a bob, but it definitely moves better as Gina said it would, and I like the angled pieces along my face. I'm a little nervous about how it'll look when I style it. Fingers crossed!

But it looks as if my search for a hair stylist is finally, thankfully, over!

The Search Continues...

funny pictures of cats with captions
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

My search for a hair stylist continues today. I'll be trying a new-to-me salon today, courtesy of my parents' birthday gift (cash). I did a lot of googling to figure out where I should go. I'd narrowed it between two salons, both in NW Portland that had several five star reviews on various websites like Citysearch and Yelp. It's a bit of a drive for me, buy I'm desperate. The ponytail has already returned, and those icky blond highlights from last summer are still there.

I just really hope I don't walk out of there with some variation of the same haircut every stylist keeps giving me. Even after I give them full reign to do whatever they want. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes. I had a nice day. Hubby surprised me with a chocolate donut with sprinkles for breakfast. I went to Nordstrom to buy my fave tinted moisturizer with birthday money from my folks, received phone calls from Amy and Tiffany, some emails and lots of Facebook notes on my wall.

I managed to get some writing done before I realized the notebook with all my revision notes was missing. Luckily hubby found it after my searches had come up empty.

My family took me to a neighborhood Thai place for dinner. We came home to chocolate cake and presents! I got two writing books from hubby, a foot scrub and crystal dog w/ a curled tail like Chaos from Mackenna, a framed picture of him from one of our lake hikes and box of Crunch and Munch from Finn and a suncatcher she colored, foot soak salts and a Butterfinger from Rose!

Hope you have a great day!

Me, too!

A new thumb would be an awesome birthday gift! But I'll be happy if I get a cake with butter cream icing and a couple of hours to write.

Really all I want is for my son to feel better. I took him to the doctor yesterday after he complained about a bad headache for a couple of days. He's got such a bad sinus infection the doctor said he wouldn't be surprised if it takes over a month on antibiotics to clear it up. This is the same kid who didn't complain about his ears hurting until his ear drums ruptured. I need to remember he has such a high tolerance of pain. Poor baby!

Hope you have a great day! I intend to!

Futility

funny pictures of cats with captions

Have you ever felt like this LOLcat? I know I have.

Lately, I've been wondering where I'll find the time to get everything done on my To Do list. There are about ten items that I can't put off. They must be completed on time, and a few of them are things I can only do myself. My hand injury kept me from getting to some things until now which means...

Everything is coming to a head at once making me feel like George Clooney's crew in The Perfect Storm. I'm sure you've found yourself in the same situation. You might even be there right now yourself.

I've realized freaking out won't help matters (even if I might feel better throwing a hissy fit or two!) What I need to do is be more organized and micro-manage my time. Neither of those things are strong points of mine, but I work best under pressure. I've come up with a schedule to help keep me on track the next few weeks. The key will be sticking to it!

If you're curious, I'm using a block schedule, assigning alloted chunks of time, but not the specific time/hours I will do things. I think this will help me keep the schedule better and still give me time to have fun with the kids. (i.e. trying to set myself up for success, not failure!)

I really want to succeed. I don't want to feel like the LOLcat above!

Need to pace myself!

funny pictures of cats with captions

I've been home approx. 1 hour today between 9:30 am and 10:00 pm. Running around again. No writing again.

I did get to have lunch with my good friend and Rose's godmother, Patricia, but the rest of the time it was errands, driving and kidlets. It's gotta stop. I haven't been feeling so hot lately. I don't mind being busy, but I like being home. Being gone so much wears me out!

Hubby set off with our son on our church's annual father-son backpacking trip. He's been busy preparing for that which has left me doing what I've been doing for the past two days. It's much easier when there's someone to share the To Do list with. But I know they're probably having a really good time so it's worth it!

Anyway, hope your Friday was fun!

Yet again!

Overload

Can you imagine what the picture of the kitty in Nepal would look like? I just love LOLcats!

My brain's on overload. I can't believe I totally forgot to blog yesterday. While I was on my morning walk, I even thought about what I wanted to blog about. Guess I thought I'd actually wrote it, not just thought it.

It was a busy day though. I walked while the kidlets had swimming lessons. I helped teach our church's Summer with the Saints program. Following that it was a rush of lunch, voting in our primary election, writing, Irish dance. I got home a little after seven, ate then spent the rest of the night revising. The heat made the couch look like the best sleeping option again, but Rocket didn't want to let me sleep. He wanted rubs. It's not even seven in the morning and I'm ready for a nap!

Where are those lazy days of summer? I want one, just one! How about you?

Manic Monday

funny pictures of cats with captions
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

The dog and cats aren't getting along. The kidlets don't want to listen to me. There are places to go, phone calls to make and things to do... It must be Monday!

I've started taking the weekends off. Not from writing (I still work a little every day), but from everything else I normally do during the week. I don't blog or read blogs. I might post a Facebook status message or Tweet, but that's it. I must admit it's been really nice! All of those things are fun, but they really are a time drain. I'd rather spend the two days my hubby has off with him, not staring at my monitor!

I'll be sure to preload the Crossfit workout since the end is near!!!!!

I had my final hand therapy session today. She had me do a paraffin wax treatment that left my hand feeling oh-so-soft and ultrasound. I can't believe how much the sessions have helped. But... the therapist doesn't recommend me climbing for the rest of the year. I'm bummed, but I'd rather be pain-free and have full use of my thumb than hurt it again by climbing too soon.

I'm continuing to work on the revisions, as well as think of my new story. It looks as if I may be turning it into a Christmas tale which will take some re-plotting.

A heat wave is returning to the PNW, too. The temperature should hit 100 degrees tomorrow. Looks like I'll be sleeping on the couch again!

How is your day going? Manic or mellow?

I'm ready to go get 'em. The revisions, that is. And I hope to do it with the same intensity as the LOL kitty. That expression on it's face is priceless.

This morning, I received an email from the continuity editor. I had sent her a note asking a few questions about the revisions, and her reply really clarified things for me. What she said works with what I'd come up with yesterday so yay!

I've been feeling a little tired this week, but persevering anyway. Today, I'm going to take it easy and just concentrate on writing. I might even sneak in a nap! The only thing on my agenda tonight is driving the kidlets to Crossfit Kids class and one to her Irish dance class. Watching something on TV or a movie sounds like a good way to finish off the night!

Hope you have a great Friday!

Revising

funny pictures of cats with captions
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

This pic reminds me of the kidlets. "But, mom, she liked what I was doing to her." Oh, yes, that's why she was screaming and crying.

I'm not at the screaming or crying stage with my revisions, but I have read over the letter so many times I think I've memorized parts. The letter only mentioned a couple of specific things. The rest of the letter was more general. That gives me more leeway, but sometimes it can be difficult to know how much to change.

Right now, it's looking like a lot. And that's not such a bad thing. I really am a layer writer. I write in drafts and each one gets better. I didn't get as many drafts in with this book as I normally do. Now's my chance to do that!

This morning, I had a great phone call with my critique partner, Virginia Kantra. We talked about three characters in the book: the hero, the heroine and the hero's best friend who also happens to be the heroine's ex-fiance. We also dissected what I had about each in the book, and what I should change. After an hour, my head was so full I was thankful it was time to take my youngest to swim lessons!

But now that I've played tennis with my son and eaten breakfast, I'm ready to put my chat into action. Manuscript, here I come. I'd already made notes and highlights through the first five chapters, but now I'll go deeper and see what happens.

What are you up to today?

I received revisions on my Las Vegas continuity book this morning so I'll be leaving my Mount Hood story and heading back to San Diego and Sin City! First I need to finish a scene in the Mount Hood book while I think about the revision letter. Second, I need chocolate. Lots o' lots of chocolate. I've lost three pounds so far on my diet, so I'll have to up the exercise to make up for the additional calories. No way can I do revisions without my fave food group!

Feeding Time

funny pictures of cats with captions
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

This row of feeding bowls would never work for my cats. I tried giving them each their own bowl. Rocket, my big boy cat (often lovingly referred to as our fat cat), would just eat all three bowl unless I stood watch. Since I don't have that much spare time on my hands, I use one bowl to feed all three now, and it works well since the cats have determined their own feeding order.

Spirit, the queen of the household, goes first. As soon as I start pouring the food, she appears. Even if Rocket is right there, he backs away so Spirit can eat. Sometimes she won't be hungry, but she wants to be the first one to check out the food bowl. A sniff, then she'll walk away without taking one bite. I'm not sure why the other cats let her get away with that, but they do. Maybe it's because she's usually the one who lets me know when they're hungry if I haven't already fed them.

It's Smalls turn next. The feline females rule in the McClone house or perhaps Rocket is just a gentleman cat. He will patiently sit and watch while she takes her turn. This must be hard for him because she won't eat from the bowl. She must first remove the food and place it on the floor. I'm guessing this is some ingrained habit after living outside for so long until she became an indoor cat. I really wouldn't want to use a garbage can as a plate, either! Though she drinks from the toilet, rarely the water bowl, so who knows what her true motivation is.

Once she finishes, it's Rocket's turn. Finally. And he enjoy every single bite!

Hope you have a great Monday!

Being a total Star Wars fangirl, this LOLcat brought a big smile to my face!

I'm currently surrounded by three sleeping cats who would agree with the above LOL kitty. Smalls is asleep on my pillow on the bed. Rocket is napping on my right near my feet. Spirit is curled up about three feet to my right. All is right in their world!

Today is a writing day for me. I lost a few days of proposal writing due to the heatwave that passed through the Pacific Northwest so I want to make up those pages so I can do something fun tonight.

Random Friday

funny pictures of cats with captions
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

Today is the last day of Irish Dance Camp for the two younger kidlets. No more spending 5 hours at the dance studio for either me or hubby! YAY! It's only once a year, but by the end of the week we're ready for it to be over with.

The temperatures have cooled significantly. I wore a sweatshirt all day yesterday. The furbabies are much more comfortable, too.

I had a great phone call with my PMR friend about my new book. I changed the plot of the book after he fell from Mount Hood in January. I was going to have my heroine be the one injured, but thought a mountain rescuer who needs to be rescued would be better. And it is!

My friend gave me some great research info plus it was really nice to talk to him again. Email only goes so far. It was wonderful to hear about his recovery. He's not 100% yet, but he has climbed Hood again and is skyjumping & basejumping.

I can't wait to work on the proposal today. I'll need to start at the beginning of chapter one again, but now I'll be able to add some significant detail in. I'm a draft writer so starting over is nothing new for me. Each pass adds more to the story, and I know this won't be the last time I do this.

Not much else to report. I hope you have a great Friday. What do you plan on doing today?

RIP Blake Snyder

One of the most dynamic and supportive writing teachers passed away yesterday from cardiac arrest. Blake Snyder was only 52 years old.

He wrote the book Save the Cat! which my wonderful friend Tiffany told me about as well as Save the Cat! Goes to the Movies. In his books, he put his personal email so you could write him. He really wanted to help writers succeed.

His books focused on screenplay writing, but they worked with novels, too. I saw him speak last summer at the RWA National conference in San Francisco. I didn't know him except for a quick "Thanks, your talk was great" moment, but I'm still having a hard time believing he's gone. He was an incredible teacher, very positive and completely approachable. It was one of the best workshops I've ever attended. I've used his 15 Beat Sheet ever since and was hoping to attend one of his seminars one of these days.

You will be missed, Blake! Thank you for all that you did to help my writing and other's, too!

Lazy Days

funny pictures of cats with captions

The last thing I wanted to do this morning was get out of bed. I was so tired, and my eyes were red. (Most likely from the tear-fest after watching Marley and Me on DVD.) I felt as if I'd been hit by a Mack truck. I dragged myself off the couch and into the shower. (It was still too warm to sleep upstairs.) I really wished I'd had nothing to do all day. I've been wishing that a lot lately.

Truth is, I would love to be lazy. I dream about having a lazy day doing nothing. That includes not having to drive anywhere.

So far my laziness remains just that...a dream. Probably a good thing with the length of my To Do list and a proposal to finish, but wouldn't it be nice to do, well, nothing for just one day?

When was the last time you took a day off and were lazy?

Jump-Two-Three

funny pictures of cats with captions

The above pic has nothing to do with today's post. I just thought it was really cute!

This week is Irish Dance camp for the two younger kidlets. That means I get to spend 5 hours a day at the Irish dance studio for the next five days. I've brought my iBook and my split keyboard. I'm all set. I just need to make sure the kidlet not in camp can keep themselves entertained while I write.

I really want to get my proposal done before the revisions for my Vegas continuity book arrive. Unfortunately last week's heat wave put a huge dent into my writing plans. Today it's only going to hit 90 degrees. I never thought I'd think that was cool, but it sure beats 104!

I continue to check off things on my To Do list. I finally heard from the last winner of my July contest so I'll be doing those prizes this week!

Hope you had a nice weekend! Ours was very nice between the baseball and dinner last night with friends from church.

Today, my nephew Connor's Junior baseball team plays for the Oregon State title. He pitched last night to get them here. Win or lose, the Cascade Jr. All-stars have had a great tourney. They've won the last three games in the fifth inning by being at least 10 runs ahead of the other teams. Sure hope that streak continues today!

We'll be heading down there in a little while. I brought my 7 and 9 year old nephews home with me last night. Five kids are definitely louder than three. We slept downstairs again. I felt like the sleep nazi. I had to keep telling them to be quiet and sleep!
