The Office

Congrats to my new favorite television show, The Office, for winning the Best Comedy Emmy last night. If you are not watching this show, please do. I can't have another fave show cancelled this season like Invasion. Trust me, I really can't.

Reasons to watch this show:
1) Top notch writing
2) Spot on acting (The entire cast is amazingly talented)
3) Office romance (more than one, actually)
4) It's laugh out loud funny (you may laugh so hard you cry)
5) Jim (who really deserves to get the girl)

On the Road Again

I'm going to be heading up to Tacoma tonight. I didn't like getting up so early on Thursday, making the drive and attending class all day. I was just too tired.

A great birthday. Yummy dinner. My cake said, "May the Force be with You." Finn thought of that one. I can't get the picture downloaded from the camera so I'll see if I can do that another time. It was really cute.

This was actually my second cake. They gave me the most beautiful German Chocolate cake complete with candles at my training class. I was so touched I nearly cried!

As for presents, I can't complain! I got the Invasion DVD, a gift certificate for a Spa Pedicure, hand weights (for when I walk in the morning), earrings, two mugs from a friend, a book called A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken from another friend, a bookmark and $$$ from my parents. The kids raided their rooms for my presents. Mackenna gave me the clay cat she'd made at the Children's Museum, Finn gave me a birdhouse he'd made and painted and Rose gave me her white and yellow unicorn. She told me to take it with me to Tacoma!

Speaking of which, I need to pack.

Another Year Older

My cell phone buzzed at 6 am this morning. Not a phone call but a text message from hubby wishing me a Happy Birthday. He called a few minutes later. I managed a "hi" before the battery died. He usually keeps my phone charged since I never remember! Oh, well...

I went for my morning walk amazed at the beauty around me. The sun looked as if it had spilled liquid gold onto Constellation Bay. A mass of small fishing boats dotted the mouth of the Bay where the river met the sea. Only the faintest wisps of clouds in the bright sky. The only sounds were a passing car every now and again, the clanging of a bell somewhere below and a random dog bark. It was truly glorious.

Hope you have a beautiful, blessed day!

Friday Fun

Today is one of those days I wish could go on and on. It was as close to perfect as I could have asked for. Even the weather cooperated! After a great day of class, my rommie and classmate for the week Luz Maria and I walked along the waterfront and ate dinner at a place called Harbor Lights. Our table was on the deck outside over Commencement Bay. Yummy grilled wild Alaskan Salmon. Oh, and the pirate ship made another appearance.

I spoke with my family, too. Things are going well on the home front. At least that's how it sounds via telephone. Rose, however, thought I was on my way home tonight. She was a little upset that I wasn't, but she was more upset about the baby mouse our cat Smalls left by the door this morning. Rose did tell me that they had bought me a birthday cake. (YAY!) Something about ribbons on it. Unless she was talking about the mouse again. She then went into great detail about the birthday cake she wanted with all of the Disney princesses (who she named individually) on it.

The other two were excited because their Daddy was finally letting them watch television. The world premiere of The Cheetah Girls 2 was on The Disney Channel tonight so neither of them wanted to talk to me except to say hi and I love you. I think I got a glimpse of adolescence.

Cannon Fire and Pirate Ships

I made it to Tacoma. Early, in fact, due to no traffic. The class was great. So great I didn't think today could get any better until I arrived at the house they'd arranged for me and another classmate to stay. It's 4 blocks from Commencement Bay in Tacoma with breathtaking views from every window. You can see planes and ships and trees and Mt. Rainier if you look East. Needless to say, it's absolutely gorgeous.

We took our host to dinner tonight to thank her for opening her home to us. As we were getting out of the car afterward, I heard cannon fire. One, two. We hurried out on the balcony. Sailing on the bay right in front of us was a pirate ship. It seemed so familiar to me. I immediately thought of the Isabella, the Spanish Galleon that I used in my book IN DEEP WATERS. All I needed was the sexy Ben Mendoza and it would have capped off a perfect day.

There was another ship that resembled a clipper ship. The two ships seemed to be having a battle. All of a sudden two more cannon's were shot and smoke appeared. It was so very cool and I wished the kidlets could have been with me.

Our host pulled out the newspaper and showed me the ship on the front page. I read the caption and understood why the ship looked so familiar. It was the same ship used as the H.M.S. Interceptor in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.

All I could think about was my son, Finn. He lives for pirates. I think I posted about his pirate birthday bash back in April. He saw the DVD for the first time this summer. I imagined his reaction, his excitement, his running around with his cutlass in hand. Not having access to a transporter device to bring him to me, I did the next best thing and called him on my cellphone. As I described what I was seeing to him, I could hear the awe in his voice, the longing, too. He asked me to take a picture. Unfortunately I forgot to pack a camera. He asked if he could come. I told him to talk to daddy and be sure to tell him they are giving tours of the ship. Hubby's a sailor who keeps talking about us sailing around the world. I told him sailing around the San Juan's for a summer was about all I thought I could handle without totally losing my mind. Yes, his idea is romantic and adventurous, but only for about thirty seconds. And then reality hits. Think about it. A boat. Five people, three of them kids who could barely handle a three hour raft trip. Three neurotic cats. Book deadlines. And homeschooling. A summer might actually be too long.

Anyway if you're anywhere near Tacoma, the ship is here until Sunday. They're giving daily tours onboard, too. It heads to Olympia on Monday.

Now it's time to finish tomorrow's reading assignment.

A Tearful Goodbye

I'll be leaving around 6 am on Thursday morning and driving to Tacoma for a class. That meant saying goodbye to the kidlets at bedtime. They've never had a problem with me leaving before. It's not that I leave them overnight much. A couple of times a year if that. The longest time was when I went to the Denver RWA conference in 2002, but I think I missed them more than they missed me during that trip. So the tears, sobs and total anguish at my going away took me completely by surprise. The two oldest ones do not want me to go. The baby doesn't really know why they are crying, but she's crying along in sympathy. I've been in to see them twice now since tucking them in, but it's not working, and my heart is just breaking. I still need to read my assignment for class tomorrow and pack. It's going to be a late night. Again.

I've been assigned a place/family to stay with while I'm there, and I have no idea if they will have a wireless internet connection. So I may or may not post again until I'm home on Saturday night.

In the meantime, checkout my website. There's a link on the left. The new cover for my November release, PLAIN JANE'S PRINCE CHARMING, and an excerpt from the book are there. I finally sent info so the site could be updated! About time, I know. I also sent a revised bio since the current one has a living in our old house and fails to mention kidlet number three except in utero. Poor baby. I never did send out birth announcements for number three. I just bought one that I could print out and stick in her baby book.

Until later or maybe Saturday. Take care! xoxox

Pressure

I think I may have mentioned before that without deadlines I don't get anything written. Whatever time I'm given is how long it will take me to write the synopsis, the proposal or the entire book. There's something about feeling as though a loaded gun is pointed at my head that ups my productivity. I thrive on the pressure. I can't help it. So when my editor reminded me we didn't set a deadline for the proposal and we should, I actually got excited when I had the date. (September 7th if anyone cares.)

It's sad really.

I mean, seriously, if one of the kidlets pulled this with a school project, they would be in big trouble. What kind of example am I setting for my children?

So besides asking for the Invasion DVD and a spa pedicure for my birthday, I'm going to see if I can give myself a dose of discipline. Not sure how I will do this so if anyone has any suggestions or advice, please share!

What Should I Ask For?

Hubby wants to know what I want for birthday. It's coming up in a few days. Last year, it was so easy. I wanted to see ROTS (again) and a life-sized Anakin cut-out. This year with the new house and everything we still need to do and buy for it, I just don't know. So please, if you have any ideas, post them in the comment section. I'd love to hear what you think!

I did tell hubby the birthday dinner menu I wanted. I'll be driving home from Tacoma that afternoon (we get Sunday off from the class I'm taking) and hope to find enchiladas (w/goat cheese and a tomatillo sauce) on the table and a birthday cake (store bought, not homemade because I love buttercream frosting!) and chocolate chip mint ice cream for dessert.

Lost and Found

This morning our checkbook turned up missing. We searched the house, the backpack, my purse and the minivan. No sign of it. I was the last person to have it. On Tuesday. I was sitting in my minivan waiting to pick up the kids from their trip to the zoo and wrote a check. But today was Sunday. Surely I couldn't have lost it then and not realized it until now!

But after checking everything over and over again, we still couldn't find it. I told hubby to call the health club where I had parked. Yes, the checkbook was there. I guess this would be a good reason to put a phone number on your checks. At least we got it back and are thankful for the kindhearted person who found it and turned it in.

Oh, and more losses today. Teeth. Finn lost two teeth today. He actually had hubby pull them out. It will be a busy night for the toothfairy.

I also read a book called LOST AND FOUND by Carolyn Parkhurst. I'd heard about it on a TAR forum and wanted to see how she handled writing about the filming of a reality TV show. I really enjoyed it and thought the writing was great. I particularly liked how she handled the POVs throughout the story with each character having their own distinct voice. If you're a fan of shows like TAR, you might want to check it out!

Okay, back to work. I decided I want to open the book in San Francisco instead of Portland. The first leg of the race needs a major international airport nearby. I'm thinking the Marina Green would be a good starting locale. I lived a couple of blocks from there. I'd use Seattle except I've heard that TAR10 begins there. I'd already decided to go west around the world instead of east when I heard the new season does that, too. I may have to check out the spoilers to make sure I don't duplicate any locales. And I bought this big world map for my office today. It's one that I can write on and figured who these people are going to get around the world in thirty days. Once I get the race legs and locales figured out, I'll take a picture of it and post it here.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun!

It was just the female kidlets and me today. Son and hubby had two birthday parties to attend. I gotta admit, it's been a great day! Not that I mind the boy stuff like tossing a football or playing catch or having a lightsaber fight, but girlie stuff is just so much fun!

Today the three of us went to the pool, saw a play (The Monster), painted nails (purple toes, pink fingernails), went out for Mexican food (enchiladas all around), listened to The Lion King soundtrack (playing the song Can You Feel the Love Tonight over and over again), learned dance steps (using this Bella Dancerella Popstar thingy/video) and watched Hannah Montana on The Disney Channel.

On the writing front, my critique partner read my first chapter. I told her I didn't think my hero and heroine were together enough. She agreed. I've already shortened the first two scenes now I just need to rewrite the last one! I want to finish this proposal. I'll be attending a class in Tacoma for a week and would really like it out of here before I leave.

Naptime No-No

It's after 10 pm. I should be working on the proposal, but my three year old is wide awake. As I type, she's talking about being a tiny baby and playing with the cats. This after performing her versions of a Light Jig, a reel and a hardshoe routine for me and hubby. She's not yawning nor showing any signs of sleepiness.

And it's 100% my fault.

We had a busy day. The Children's Museum. Toys R Us. Lunch out. By the time we got home it was well after 2. So I put Rosie down for her nap. And she slept. And slept. And slept.

I took advantage of naptime. I checked email, got a little writing done, worked on spelling with one kidlet and worked on reading with the other.

When she finally woke up, she'd slept for over three hours. Normally this isn't a problem when she goes down for her nap on time. Needless to say I learned my lesson.

Book Soundtracks

One of my favorite things to do is find songs that fit the book I'm writing. It used to just be one song for each book, but now I've got mini-soundtracks for books that I put together using iTunes. I'll play the songs when I'm brainstorming, revising and doing copyedits. It's a quick and easy way to get my mind in the book, too. Something that comes in handy for a mom writer who often has to turn writing on and off like a switch due to the family.

These are the songs I've come up with so far for the proposal (working title: Last Man On Earth):

What's Left of Me by Nick Lachey (Jace's theme)
Dreams to Dream by Linda Rondstandt (Millie's theme)
Here Without You by 3 Doors Down
It's My Life by Bon Jovi
It's My Life by No Doubt
If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot (one of my favorite songs of all time!)
Theme from Amazing Race (still haven't found it to download, so I listen to it on the website!)

I'll probably add more songs as I get deeper into the book.

I'm still waffling on Far Away by Nickleback. I really like the song, but I think it might actually be for the next book, the one I've been researching and jotting notes about at 1 am. That's what happened with Here Without Out You by 3 Doors Down. I thought it was for Marriage for Baby, but it was actually for this new book!

What do you like to listen to while you work?

Another Line Bites the Dust

Rumors have been circulating since the RWA National Conference, but the fate of the Bombshell line was announced yesterday. Bombshell will cease publication after January 2007.

Having been through this myself with the Yours Truly line (my first book was the last YT published in April '99) and more recently with Silhouette Romance (the last books of that line will be out in January 2007, my heart aches for all the Bombshell writers. I hope they and their kick-ass heroines find homes with other lines or even better single title houses!

And now to end on a happier note, here are some pics from our vacation! I saw the mule deer during my morning walk the last day. There were two does and three of the cutest fawns I've ever seen. The kidlets liked riding on the bike trails. Me riding my pal Dennis.

Reality TV Hotties

I've been surfing the Internet looking for good looking hero-type guys who've been on reality TV shows. Tough job, isn't it? But I need some inspiration for my new proposal and I'm very visual when it comes to the characters in my books. And this one is a little tougher. I not only have my hero to figure out, but a pair of hotties who are competing against him and the heroine.

Tori, who often leaves comments (which lets me know someone is actually reading this thing! Thanks, Tori! xoxo), suggested Hunter Ellis from Survivor Marquesa fame. I googled him today, and I see what she means. But I need more.

Here are my requirements:
1) Athletic (must look good without a shirt on. Image google Hunter Ellis if you want to know what I'm talking about!)
2) Attractive (doesn't have to be pretty boy type, though I love those kind. Rugged will do for this book.)
3) Someone you would want to spend thirty days racing around the globe with (i.e. tense, close, dangerous, adventurous situations.)

If you have any suggestions, please speak up!

Oh, and now for our final day of Sunriver. This one is easy since we were on our way home after lunchtime. While Mackenna and I went on a one hour trailride, the rest of the family rode bikes out by the marina and stables.

Mackenna looked so tiny on this big chestnut horse named Hoover, but she had no trouble riding him. Her pony camp and birthday parties at Once Upon a Horse in West Linn served her well. I know it's just a matter of time before she starts talking about riding lessons on a more regular basis. I think most little girls go through a horse stage. (The same with a dolphin stage!) I took lessons myself. Some girls just don't grow out of it though. Other's are forced to. (Raising hand!) I think it might be time to bring my horse collection up from my parents' house and see if Mackenna and Rose want any of them for their rooms.

As for my trailride, I rode Dennis, a horse who obviously had a mind of his own. As soon as I got on, the guide told me he liked to drink water and eat grass so rein him in if I have to. But Dennis wasn't so bad. In fact, he was better behaved than the horse right in front of us. Doodle did nothing but eat grass, fart and go to the bathroom. For the entire hour. I did mention he was right in front of us, didn't I? Both Dennis and I got very tired of it so we tried to keep our distance. But we bonded from the experience and I was sad to say goodbye to him. Of course, my legs were as wobbly as linguini when I climbed off. And they hurt, too! I hadn't ridden in years, and I'd forgotten what it felt like.

After the ride, the kidlets each got to pick a souvenir. Any guesses as to who picked what?

1) A toy rifle
2) A purse with a stuffed horse in it
3) A purse with a stuffed cat in it

Too many cooks

This week there are no camps, no trips, nothing except our normal outings. Today is speech therapy for Finn and our farmshare pickup. An easy day!

Especially since my house is pretty much spotless. We were gone all day yesterday to hubby's company's picnic at Oaks Park, the oldest amusement park in the USA. It's in a part of Portland called Sellwood that's right along the Willamette River. The kidlets had a blast riding the rides, eating sno-cones and all sorts of other junk food and just being with other kids.

The house blessing went well. The kidlets thought it was hilarious that Father tossed Holy Water everywhere. He even got the cats! The only embarrassing moment was when he was about to open the door to the garage. (I would have needed a week to unpack the piles of boxes and organize it.) I told him to close his eyes. He smiled and said he'd seen the worst a garage could look. He opened the door, tossed in water and said this was pretty much the worst he'd seen!

We, however, averted a huge cooking mishaps which relates to the title of this blog. My darling hubby and I have divided up the cooking chores. He does most of the everyday dinners. I do the big meals, holidays or when we have guests. He always teases me that I don't know how to cook, goes on and on about that he's such a good cook, yadda-yadda-yadda.

Anyway, I made lasagna for our dinner with the priest on Saturday night. Between grocery shopping, the house and the kids, I was running a little late. I finished the lasagna, turned on the oven and told hubby I needed to grab a shower. I told him when the oven was finished pre-heating to put the pan in for forty-five minutes and I dashed upstairs.

When I came back downstairs, I made the salad dressing and prepared the appetizers. I didn't think to check the lasagna, after all, hubby is such a good cook. Besides all he had to do was stick it in the oven, right?

Wrong.

For some reason, a reason he could not explain to me except for a "that's the shelf where I cook everything", he placed the lasagna on the top shelf which meant the top layer of mozzarella burned. Badly. He said no one would notice. Yeah, right.

Needless to say I wasn't happy. (That's putting it lightly!)

Luckily we had extra mozzarella. So I scrapped off the burnt layer, added new cheese and put the lasagna in the oven on the right shelf. This time the cheese came out fine, a light golden brown color. I think hubby will now think twice about what shelf he cooks meals on!

Oh, our Sunriver trip report. When I said I never opened my computer at Sunriver again in my last report, I didn't so I never wrote about the last couple of days. But here's a quick rundown for Tuesday. We rented a raft and floated down the Deshutes River. It was a very relaxing time, though about an hour too long for the kidlets. We stopped around the 4-5 mile mark for a picnic lunch on the shore. My arms got a good workout rowing. After rafting, we went to the South Pool for a couple hours of swimming. They have a great baby pool complete with water jetting out from tall tubes like a big sprinkler. Then it was off to the village for an Italian dinner at Bella Cucina. We ended the evening with a dip in the hot tub. I think all three kidlets were asleep before their heads hit the pillow that night!

Home Before Midnight

I'm still getting used to being home. Vacation laundry is finally finished, but I was on craigslist today looking at the various vacation rentals that are available. We can't go away again right now. Still it's nice to dream. Especially when I had to put writing on hold today. We're having our house blessed on Saturday and I was warned that the priest blesses the closets, too. So guess what I did today?

I have a great book to recommend. Home Before Midnight by Virginia Kantra has it all--suspense, mystery and a very satisfying romance. It's the story about a true crime writer, his research assistant and a widowed, single-dad police detective. When the writer's wife is found dead, the writer and his assistant are the main suspects. But soon that murder is the least of their problems! Virginia is a talented, award-winning author who writes amazing characters and packs her books full of emotion and suspense. It's on the shelves now so be sure to look for it!

Sunriver trip report continues...

Monday, August 6th - I went for my morning walk (great time to brainstorm and think about the book especially since I had yet to write a word since arriving.) As I rounded a curve, I saw a buck. He stood four feet away from me and was absolutely gorgeous. Velvet covered his antlers. He munched on a shrub, his dark eyes never leaving mine. I watched him for the longest time, neither of us moving. I kept thinking "Why didn't I bring the camera?" He was truly a breathtaking animal. I sure hoped he lived in Sunriver all the time, especially during hunting season!

When I got home, we went for a family bike ride over the Deshutes River. One thing I love about Sunriver is the 37 miles or so of paved bike paths. It makes it so easy to ride or walk without worrying about cars. We met a cute black lab (aka Waterdog) who kept the kidlets entertained by chasing after a ball in the river. Rose wants a dog (a real one as she keeps telling us) so badly. She asked Santa for one for Christmas and he brought her a stuffed one. Not good enough so she's decided she will save her money (our question is what money?) and buy a real dog herself.

After the bike ride, we headed to the Marina to reserve a raft for tomorrow then took the two youngest for pony rides. Mackenna and I made a reservation to go on a trail ride on Wednesday morning.

We explored the Sunriver Lodge and paid a visit to the village where we stopped by Goody's for more candy and picked up a pizza for dinner. While the little one napped back at the house, we taught the two older ones to play Texas Hold'Em. They, of course, kept winning hands! Gotta love a six year old who goes all in on a pair of twos and ends up with a flush!

Once everyone went to bed, I actually wrote. I downloaded my pages from my Alphie. I'd been procrastinating about that! Part of me was happy with what was there, another part wished there had been more words. Still I kept going, liking what I'd written in snatches of time last week. Good thing, since that was the most work I got done the rest of the trip!

What day is it?

Getting home from vacation usually happens on a Sunday, not a Wednesday so my interior clock is all screwed up. Today feels like a Monday.

I had a moment of panic when I couldn't find the opening scene to my new proposal. It was the one thing I knew (or at least hope) needed little work. I'd searched my iBook for it when I was at Sunriver, but couldn't find it. I checked my Alphie, not there. So I turned on my other mac today and... It wasn't there, either. I totally panicked. I searched through everything. Checked the alphie again. Went back to the iBook. Of course, the file was there. Right were it should be. I had just named it with the book titles initials and the word "proposal" instead of "prologue."

Of course my "panic" got put into perspective when I read an email from a group I belong to. We started on GEnie and migrated to yahoogroups, but we've been together for years. I joined in 1995. Anyway, one of the member's husband died last night. She didn't give any details except to say she wasn't alone and would post more later.

So while I try to work on the new story and attempt not to check my email every five minutes, I'll leave you with our next day's Sunriver vacation...

SUNDAY, August 6th: Sunday was all about having fun. The day started with an hour plus morning walk for me where I saw three different groups of mule deer and tried to figure out what the theme song of the new book would be, and a bike ride to the Fort Rock playground for everyone else. I've really been trying to do some sort of exercise every day so I didn't want to lose my momentum while on vacation. Hah! Little did I know everything we did would be working muscles I forgot I had. Or maybe I didn't have which is why the hot tub got lots of use!

We met our friends, who were visiting parents, at the Crosswater pool for an afternoon of swimming. Crosswater is just outside of Sunriver and the kind of place I could live. That is if I were rich and could afford a $750K to a million dollars on a vacation home. (Maybe I'll have to buy a lotto ticket this week!) The development is beautiful with breathtaking views and stunning houses. I had serious house envy. What my hubby saw of the golf course made him drool. The pool was even gorgeous with classy locker rooms complete with fluffy white towels and whatever beauty products you might need.

After nearly three hours of swimming, we thanked our friends, bid them a safe trip back to Washington state and headed to the village for a round of miniature golf, candy at Goody's, dinner at El Pescador and a jaunt for the kidlets through the inflatable obstacle course.

Sunriver Serenity

I'm home. I'll be honest, I wish we were still in Sunriver. It was the perfect vacation. Great weather. No injuries (last year we spent one morning at St. Charles ER with youngest kidlet.) Just simply a wonderful time.

I did not have a Wi-fi connection, and I was too busy (okay, lazy) to go find one. I was having too much fun to worry about email, etc. Of course, I came home to over 400 emails and I've yet to check the email account attached to my website. Oh, well... whatever I have to do to get through them all will be worth it.

But I did keep blogging in case I ever made it to the village with my computer in tow. So here goes:

SATURDAY, August 5th - We made it to Sunriver in time to unload the minivan, put away the groceries and change clothes for Mass. Making it to church was the only must accomplish item on our itinerary this week so we got that checked off on day one!

When we arrived at the church, we saw a family from our parish and school. The kidlets were so excited. Then during communion, we saw a family from our old parish and school. Watching my daughter's wide-eyed gaze meet her former classmate's was so heartwarming. And I was proud of both girls for not losing sight of the solemnity of the moment (receiving the Holy Eucharist), either. After Mass, we talked with both families. A sleepover with one was quickly planned once we get home. We agreed to meet the other family for swimming on Sunday. Needless to say, a good start to our vacation.

That night I finished a book that I'd been starting and stopping for the last couple of months due to life getting in the way. My good friend Tiffany had given me an autographed copy. I'd enjoyed what I'd read so far so I decided to just start over and read it straight through. That's my favorite way to read a novel even if it means staying up all night.

The Traveling Death and Resurrection Show is by Ariel Gore, who also wrote Atlas of the Human Heart. The protagonist is named Frankka (real name: Frances Catherine.) Her stage name is Saint Cat and her "trick" is the ability to bring on the stigmata during a performance. If it sounds a bit out there, it is, but I enjoyed the story. The well-written book is spiritual, irreverent and thought provoking all at the same time. I loved the saint book stories, where Frankka writes about different saints. If you are looking for something a little different, be sure to check it out. But be warned, it's nothing like any Harlequin/Silhouette you've ever read!

So that's day one. More tomorrow! Right now my furbabies need some attention.

TGIF

We survived. The kidlets and I. Irish dance camp is over. The blistered feet will heal. No rolled or sprained ankles. Only a minor breakdown on mommy's part. All in all, a success. The best part? Six whole days before we have too drive back down there!

To celebrate Friday's arrival, we ate dinner at our friend's house. This friend is also a professional chef who did the food for my daughter's first communion in May. Talk about yummy food. She even made homemade blackberry ice cream! Of course now it's our turn to invite them over, and that's an intimidating thought since she's such an amazing cook. But I'll deal with that when we get home.

Now it's time to prepare for our departure tomorrow. Only one more load of laundry to do and I can finish packing. We have a cat sitter staying at the house to make sure my furbabies don't go wild while we're away so I need to leave instructions. And I really do need to download my alphie and see how much I've gotten done on the book. My goal is to come back with the proposal completed so I need to know how much I have left.

If there's wireless access, I'll blog, but if not I'll be back on Wednesday! Take care and have a great weekend!

Earthquake

At approx. 1:37 am, an earthquake hit Southwest Washington State. We weren't near the epicenter, but we still felt it. The door to our bathroom rattled and creaked. The bed felt as if we'd inserted quarters to turn on the magic finger machine. The entire structure seemed to shake. I was, of course, awake. Hubby woke from a deep sleep and thought it was one of the cats.

Having been through the Northridge quake in 1971 (me) and the Loma Prieta quake in 1989 (hubby) and lots of little ones in between and since then, it was nothing new. But it was a bit strange feeling one here and not in the San Francisco Bay area where we used to live. I figured one (a bigger one) must have hit Seattle. Glad I was wrong.

The kidlets slept through the entire thing. The cats didn't seem particularly disturbed except our outdoor cat, Smalls, wanted to sleep inside and that's the first time she'd done that in weeks.

But there were a couple other cats who sat on our patio howling last night starting at 1 o'clock. Guess they must have wanted inside, too!

When will it end?

I want this week to end.

Not only are we going on a much needed vacation in three days, but this has been the worst week of the summer. Forget the hundred degree plus days without a/c. This is worse. Two of the kids are in Irish Dance camp. Not so bad one might think, like me when I registered them in June. But Finn has class from 9-11 am. Mackenna has class from 2-4:30 pm. It's far enough away that we can't drive back and forth. Which means we are gone all day long. Meals are eaten out. I've discovered parks I never knew existed, the carousel at Jantzen Beach and how glad I am we have a membership to OMSI. Of course, that also means there's no time for writing. And I have a proposal to write. And another story idea to research. I should have been done with the proposal this week. What I have written is still on my Alphie. I'm afraid to download it in case there isn't much there. Pathetic. But I can't help it.

I really want to scream. Through a tantrum. Pull one of Rose's drama princess routines big time.

Okay, I pretty much did the last thing this morning. A couple tears may have been involved. Sniffles definitely.

But it worked.

Tomorrow I only have to make one trip down there. My adorable hubby is going to do the other one.

Of course, I'll still have two kids to keep me busy, but that's easy to do here. And I won't have to eat junk (dieting, remember) or starve. Maybe I'll even get another scene done. Or two. And start packing for our trip!

I'll even do the dishes (hubby's chore) if it means staying home for a morning!

National Night Out

Tonight, August 1st, is National Night Out. The only reason I know that is because the kidlets and I just got back from the one thrown in our town. We were on the way home from the library when the kids saw a bounce house in the park. We stopped and had a great time.

The event was sponsored by Target and local police forces and is going on nationwide. Crash test dummies, Larry and Vince, were on hand to great the kidlets. I was surprised Rose wanted to meet them! Of course, my three kids, the perfect Pump It UP consumers who were ever born, only wanted to get into the bounce house. I finally managed to pull them away when I said there was food--hot dogs, chips, popcorn and soda. The kidlets got to check out a police car, get a jr. Deputy badge and a tattoo. I picked up a first aid book put out by the Red Cross. Had we arrived earlier, we could have been part of a door prize drawing for Target gift cards and a paper shredder.

As we were leaving, I thanked one of the Target volunteers. She said they plan to do it next year! So if you find yourself at home, next August first, you might want to check it out.

Love and donuts

My three year old told me this morning, "You don't love me, Mommy."

I asked why.

She said because I didn't have any donuts for her to eat for breakfast. Then she announced how she didn't like daddy because he had eaten all the donuts. I didn't tell her that daddy prefers bagels to donuts, and that I was probably the one who ate the last donut hole while she was at her Nana and Papa's. That might not be such a good idea when she is going on and on about how I hurt her heart. With her tears and long-drawn out sobs, she might actually have a future in acting.

I know all she needs right now is to go back to bed. We were out really late last night at a friend's house (great food and company and about 20 kids running all over the place), but she woke up at the same time she always does. Unfortunately that means only one thing for the rest of us... It's going to be a really long day.

Fathers

Yesterday I found out that the father of one of my closest friends (who is also the godmother of my oldest child) died. She lost her mother to breast cancer when we were in college together. I called her at her dad's house, and it was difficult to know the right words to say. We talked. About her dad. About her family. About so many different things.

After I hung up, I reread the obituary my friend had emailed me. Her father had a friend write it when he was still alive and suffering a horrible illness that could not be diagnosed. The words of his obituary captured the essence of who he'd been. I remembered the dinners he'd treated us to the many times he'd visited Palo Alto and San Francisco. I remembered the many adventures and travels he'd taken over the years. And I remembered how much he loved his children, Leigh and Rob. I used the name Armstrong for my heroine Christina in my book IF THE RING FITS... because of my friend and her father. Many hugs and prayers to Mr. Armstrong's family and friends who will miss him so much.

Yesterday was also my father's birthday. Tonight we're all getting together to celebrate his turning 76. The kidlets can't wait to go to Nana and Papa's house and are so excited. They've even packed suitcases on the chance Nana asks them to stay the night. Me? I just want to give my dad a great, big hug and not let go for a really long time.

Design on a Lime

Tonight is the book release party for my friend Anne Ryan's floral arranging book Design on A Lime. Anne does flowers for weddings, special events, you name it while staying home with her kids. A big congrats to her and her hubby on the arrival of their newest child, too!

Anne does incredible arrangements. Check out www.designonalime.com and www.anneryan.com if you're in a flower mood.

Cooling off

The temperatures are finally bearable. Thank goodness.

I've been busy coming up with my own reality television show that I'll be using for my next book. It's an idea approved by my editor, not the continuity that just sold. Anyway, if you've read this blog, you probably know which reality show is my favorite and will be inspiring the game I must make up.

So if you love The Amazing Race and have any challenge ideas or places you'd like to see that haven't already been on Seasons 1-9, please let me know. I'd love some brainstorming help on this. I'm thinking a 10 - 12 race legs, one for each chapter. I already have three countries I want to use, but I need more. A lot more. I already have a name for the show and it does need to be different from TAR so I'm trying to come up with different rules and stuff. Anyway, I've been spending lots of time reading about all the seasons of TAR and it's been so much fun. Definitely bringing back lots of memories (and contestants) from years past!

Another Scorcher

Yesterday, the kidlets and I spent the day trying to escape another day of 100 degree plus temperatures. We visited friends (who have a/c), went shopping, cooled off at the speech therapy office, picked up our harvest share at the CSA farm we belong to and ate dinner at Izzy's (always a kid favorite.) We were gone from noon until 7:30 pm. Of course, it was still hot when we got home.

Today is cooler. Thank goodness. I was either going to have to spend the night at a friend's house or stay in a hotel. Yes, I'm a total wimp when it comes to heat. I lived in Arizona for three years (three summers too long!) and I'd rather be cold than hot any day.

With all this driving around in my air conditioned mini-van, I'm even further behind on the new proposal, but the kids are going out today so I may get some work done finally!

At least I won't have a lot of email to bog me down since many of the writers on the email loops I belong to will be gone! I can finally catch up on all my email and clear out my inbox!!!

Hot! Hot! Hot!

The temps in the NW have surpassed 100 degrees. Unfortunately we decided to wait to put in air conditioning. Luckily we spent this weekend in Seattle at an Irish Dancing Feis so I'm hoping we missed the worst of it. Too bad the house was over 90 degrees when we got home last night. My poor furbabies (aka cats) are miserable. Spirit just pants. It's so sad. We keep trying to cool her off, but that just seems to upset her more. I'm praying today will be cooler.

In Seattle, we visited IKEA for the first time. That place is totally overwhelming with warehouse after warehouse of covered parking. Not the kind of place you run into to grab an item. We went there for a Gubbo chair for my son's room. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued. Now I'll need to find something else that looks "space-like" for his Star Wars room.

I had great plans to work on the new proposal this weekend, but the kids wanted to spend their non-dancing time in the pool and it was more fun to be with them. Of course that now means a week of late nights to catch up. Oh well... Nothing new!

My friend Debbie highly recommended Jodi Picoult books to me when she was here last weekend. I've been reading a couple non-fiction books right now that are pretty heavy (lots of footnotes) and could use a good fiction one.

Many of my writer friends are heading to Atlanta this week for the Romance Writers of America's national conference. Both my agent and my editor will be there, too. But I'll be here. With the kids. The cats. And no a/c. The not-so-glamorous life of a mom/writer!

Where did the time go?

I had a blast on my one night getaway. Met a bunch of NYT bestselling authors, both mainstream and romance. I was definitely the small fish that night at the BBQ on Bainbridge Island, but everyone was so nice and made me feel very welcome.

I got home a week ago and it seems like I've been going ever since! Kids wanting to have fun each and every day. That about covers what I've been doing. Oh, and my best friend, Debbie, who I attended college with and backpacked through Europe with, came up last weekend. We shopped and talked and had a great girls' weekend.

I had some good news on the writing front!

One of my story ideas got the nod of approval so I'm writing the proposal right now. I absolutely love this idea and am going to have so much fun with it!

I received copies of PLAIN JANE'S PRINCE CHARMING in hardcover. The book is going to be released in the UK as a Mills & Boon hardcover in September and will come out in November as a Silhouette Romance.

And the biggest news of all... Last year, I joined a email loop for Silhouette Romance authors who were invited to submit to the new Harlequin Romance line. A couple of weeks ago one of the authors, Shirley Jump, got an idea for us to put a continuity together. So we did. Six of us. In a week. With no arguments, disagreements or problems. Divas R Not Us! Anyway, we thought it was a great idea and submitted to Mills & Boon. We found out this week they want to buy it. We're looking at a 2008 release right now and are so excited about it!!!!!

Mommy Time Off

In a couple of hours, I get to hop in my hubby's car and head north. Alone. I get the next day all to myself. I'm so excited. I'm staying at a B&B right on the waters of the Puget Sound and attending a BBQ at a writer friend's house.

I really need a break from everyday life! Even if it's only 30 hours.

Update:
- my author pages (proofs/galleys) arrived for MARRIAGE FOR BABY on Monday and I started reading through them yesterday

- saw THE DEVIL WORE PRADA with my friend, Patricia, on Friday night. I enjoyed it. Pure chick flick. Loved Nigel. Hated how unsupportive her friends were, however. "Gee Andi, you've really changed and I hate this new you who has to work all the time and dress nice and give us all these expensive gifts. But can I have the $1000 purse?" With friends like that, including her whiney boyfriend, she'd be better off with the clackers at Runway and that writer dude, Christian. I never read the book so I'm not sure how the adaption was.

- submitted more ideas to my editor. She didn't like the original one I'd sent her.

- been doing the Sonoma Diet and losing weight. I am now back to my weight on the November 1, deadline date. Now to lose a few more pounds and I'll be a very happy camper.

That's about it for now!

Fireworks and fun

Happy 4th of July! I hope wherever you in the world that you have sunny skies and a great day. We are heading to my sister's farm for a day of tubing on the creek, bbq and shooting off fireworks tonight.

Also I'm glad to know that I'm not the only night owl around here. Thank you to Tori and denlover for letting me know in the comment section that they stay up late, too. Maybe some night when we've finished all our work we can have a midnight chat!

Be safe especially around fireworks! I still remember the book Follow My Leader by James B. Garfield that I read when I was a kid. Jimmy went blind from a firecracker incident and got a seeing eye dog named Leader.

Take care and have lots of fun and watermelon, too!

July already

Where did June go? I just checked my blog and realized I have not been posting. I get traffic reports and want to thank those people who haven't given up on me and still read this thing. I will try to do better!

It's been busy around here. Still haven't heard from my editor about my idea, but I've been working on other ideas. I've got the kidlets enrolled in swimming lessons so that takes up my mornings. We spent July 1st at a Canada Day party and had a blast. I played street hockey for the first time and a game I have no idea how to spell. I teamed with our parish priest and we won. The other team didn't score a point. Of course I think we may have had a bit of help from above!

It's after 1 o'clock in the morning and I really should be in bed. Of course, I started googling a few things and the next thing I know, well, it's after 1! The Internet just sucks time away. Still it's a great research tool. I just have to try to go to bed before midnight. But the house is finally quiet. The phone doesn't ring. And I can actually get some work done. Though I pay the price in the morning. My 3 year old's naptime sure is looking good!

How late do you usually stay up? And do you take naps?

Nighty night.

Summer Days

I've been ignoring everything except the kidlets. The first two days of their summer vacation I was sick in bed. So I've been making it up to them. This weekend we went to our church's annual summer camp. We slept in bunks in cabins. It was the first time since high school I ate pizza made in cookie sheets. Since I'd never attended camp as a kid, I have no idea what camp is supposed to be all about, but it was really fun. Though the mattresses were really thin and hard.

Last night we had dinner with friends at McCormick and Schmidt's Harborside. I had the Dungeness crab cocktail and the sweet Thai shrimp salad. Very yummy! Our friends invited us to see the American Idol concert with them. They got a suite and I'm so excited. Of course, the kidlets are going to be very bummed they aren't going, but I'll get some cool souvenirs for them!

Quick writing update:

I sent a new book idea to my editor on Friday. Fingers crossed that she likes it.

My November release, PLAIN JANE'S PRINCE CHARMING, is on amazon.com. No cover yet.

My April '05 release, BLUEPRINT FOR A WEDDING, will be released in the UK as a Mills & Boon Tender in August.

The temperature is going to be above 100 degrees again today and we never got around to installing a/c. After leaving in Arizona for three years, I hate the heat. Today is not going to be fun.

Hope you are staying cool!

Schools out for the summer!

My kidlets are thrilled. Today was the last day of school. Of course it would feel more like summer if the rain would stop. Oh, the joy of living in the Pacific NW! Once Fourth of July rolls around the weather will improve. Fingers crossed!

I spent today researching ideas for new books. I have a list of characters, subjects and settings. I'm trying to figure out if I can turn any of them into books. My editor emailed me this morning saying she's looking forward to seeing my ideas. After a book with a child who has leukemia and the last one with an orphaned four-month old, I want something more fun to write about. I had an idea for a sequel to IF THE RING FITS... but I was told royalty is out for now. Harlequin has a royalty continuity coming out. So we'll see what I come up with.

On the home front, I've found a new show to watch now that my beloved INVASION has been cancelled. It's called THE OFFICE and is on Thursday nights. If you've ever worked in an office environment, you'll find it hilarious. No yummy eye-candy like Eddie Cibrian, but the actor who plays Jim is pretty cute. Check it out.

Free at last!

I finished my revisions last night! The manuscript is ready to be emailed, but I keep hesitating, wondering if I should read it one last time just in case. I'm sooooo much happier with the book now. My editor had some great suggestions that didn't take a lot of work but made such a difference to the story. Having time to do an extra pass through the book and then read it aloud really helped, too.

After I finished this final pass, I read the kidlets a chapter from Prince Caspian, put them to bed, then settled on the couch with hubby. I was hoping to find FLIGHTPLAN on PPV, but it wasn't there. My good friend and former co-worker at UAL, Alan, told me that Jodie Foster's character had the job as we did and that I should watch it. I guess I'll check Hollywood Video and see if I can find it. We ended up watching U-571 instead. Definite guy flick, but some nice candy. Could have used a better script with a lot more character development, but there sure was a lot of action. Hubby enjoyed it.

Now the fun begins. Reaching THE END is the best part of writing, but coming up with new book ideas to submit is pretty neat, too. I get to spend the week reading and watching movies. Napping and daydreaming. Brainstorming and scribbling. All in the name of writing. Wish me luck!

And I'll need luck this weekend, too. Forty plus people for a Texas Hold-em Party and BBQ at our house. We (and two other very fun couples) are hosting an auction buy-in party to support the kidlet's school. I guess I should start working on it!

What I'm Reading

I used to always have a book going and about ten waiting in the wings. I would read when I nursed (aloud so the baby could hear, too), before bedtime and whenever I got a free moment and I wasn't writing. Reading kept me sane during those early baby and writing years. I could escape into a book and forget everything else until one of the kidlets woke up. And then I had baby number three.

Suddenly reading was a luxury. The TBR (to be read) pile got boxed up. I quit my bookclub. And I finished less and less books on my own. There just wasn't time. But I'm trying to carve time into my schedule each day for reading.

Here's what I'm reading now:
Chronicles of Narnia (a chapter a night to the kids)
The Little Princess (a chapter a day with my oldest, we alternate reading pages)

On my nightstand waiting to be read as soon as revisions are done:
Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie
The Traveling Death and Resurrection Show by Ariel Gore

What are you reading? I'd love to find some good books to add to my nightstand!

Back to work!

I totally enjoyed my weekend off. Walks with the kids, dinners with friends and a trip to the movies to see Over the Hedge. Now I'm back to work on the revisions and making good progress.

My only problem right now is Monty. Who is Monty? Monty is a cat we found him on our deck a couple of weeks ago. He had a collar on with a tag so I phoned their owners who promptly came and got him. Later that day, he was back. He's been back every since. Now the collar is gone. And he stands outside our door and cries all night long.

I don't mind him hanging out during the day, but the meowing to get in at all hours is driving me crazy. At first I thought it was one of my fur babies so I kept getting up. Now I know better, but it still bothers me and is keeping me awake. I know he has a family, and we already have too many cats. Any ideas on what we should do about Monty?

A little R&R

My facial and massage last night were wonderful. I left the spa feeling so relaxed and rejuvenate. I wish I had time during a deadline for something like this. I think it would really help, but as hubby pointed out last night, I would never take the time away from writing to visit a spa. Unfortunately he's right. During deadlines, I have the book and my kids on my mind. That's pretty much it.

Tonight we're having friends over for dinner. A wonderful family we met through school and church. They have 9 children. You can guess that my kidlets are so excited to have so many kids coming to visit at one time. I think our playroom will get a lot of use tonight. We're having pizza. Salad (they're bringing it). Apples and grapes. Brownie ice cream sundaes. Very easy and kid friendly.

We're still trying to figure out what to do tomorrow and Monday. The weather is not cooperating (rain, again) so we may hit OMSI and/or the movies to see Over The Hedge. We were hoping for sun so we could go hiking. Oh, well... that's what we get for living in the Pacific Northwest.

In spite of the rain, I'm just enjoying my time off from writing. I'm taking a three day break from the revisions to be with the family. I'm catching up on some house stuff, catching up with friends (dinner tonight here, tomorrow we're going to another friend's house) and trying to keep the kids from playing catch inside. I finally caved and put on Narnia. Everyone is a lot happier now.

Hope you have a Happy Memorial Day weekend. Talk to you on Tuesday!

Quick Update

Here's my week so far:

Complete emailed on Monday night.

Spent Tuesday doing the AFS (Art Fact Sheet) which Harlequin uses to make the covers. Ignored email except from agent and editor.

Wednesday morning an email arrived from my editor. She's already read the manuscript, likes it, but has a few changes (i.e. revisions). Spent morning as a substitute teacher in my daughters 2 1/2 hour class which went from order to chaos every five minutes. Spent the afternoon and early evening figuring out what revisions she wanted and how long I thought it would take. Watched LOST. Still ignoring email except from editor.

Thursday morning started decluttering house when I got a phone call inviting me and youngest kidlet to the zoo. We went. Missed naptime so no work. Took kids to piano and Irish dance. Still no writing. We're home, kids are in bed and now I get to start revising. (It's 9:14 pm) Not a lot of time for email today, either.

Friday - hubby made me an appt. for my facial and massage tomorrow. He's watching the kids. I can't wait!

Monday, May 22, 2006

It's off!

I just emailed my manuscript to the HMB offices in London! YAY! Now I can watch the Alias Series Finale.

A few things I learned during polishing:

- I called my hero (Jared) by two other names: Jake (from a book I wrote before selling) and Reed (from Santa Brought a Son)

- Tom Welling is cute, but he wasn't my hero. Don't worry, Tori and Lissa, you'll still get your books. But I learned yesterday my muse should have been Russell from INVASION. Yep, he was right in front me this entire time. So I had to go back in and add a dimpled smile. I just knew Jared was missing something. The scene where he is sweaty and doesn't have a shirt on tipped me off!

- By getting rid of the extra THATs, I lost a page. Some thing with, THING. I also overused the words LOOK, ALREADY, RIGHT NOW and FOCUSED. Not to mention a few others.

- By going back and searching on the word IT, and actually putting what I meant by IT into words, you can strengthen the sentence. Not that I'm suggesting not using IT, because I do, but there are instances the detail improves the writing.

- Smiles, unless they are dimpled or tell us something about the characters emotion, are worthless. As are most glances, gazes and looks. I still use the words/phrases, but not as much as I used to.

- Other words I could use for STALEMATE. IMPASSE, DEADLOCK, STAND-OFF. DRAW.

- I didn't have a lot of kissing in the book so I added three in the last chapter. And it's only ten or so pages long!

Huge hugs and kisses to my hubby who kept me fed and watched the kids so I could get this book finished on time. Now he's a true hero!

I'm going to relax now. Talk to you on Wednesday!

Deadline Day

Quick update. Spent the weekend writing. The manuscript is currently 216 pages. Longer than I needed. The book is due today so I'm kind of panicked right now that I can finish polishing and inputing the changes in time. I'm shooting for an email time of ten pm so it's in my editor's London inbox when she arrives to the office tomorrow morning.

As for the book...

My critique partner extraordinaire saved my hero, Jared, from being completely emasculated in the final chapter. I stayed up until 2 am rewriting my girlie man into a man's man. It works much better now. Huge sigh of relief.

I'm off to polish, polish, polish so I can buff my rough diamond into something that will sparkle!

Friday, May 19, 2006

Complete!

I have a completed manuscript. You'll noticed I didn't say finished manuscript. There's a difference. Ever heard of the phrase "diamond in the rough?" My first editor once told me that about a completed manuscript that I hadn't had time to polish yet.

What this means is my work has really just started. I have a couple days to get the complete polished and sparkling like the diamond I hope it can be.

Here's the tally for Friday so far:

Today's goal: Finish complete!
Pages written today: Three new scenes
Daily new page goal: 10 (surpassed this and it's not even 2:30 pm)
Pages revised: none yet
Pages polished and good to go: 155
Pages left to polish: 57
Days until book is due: 3 (I emailed my editor. I have all Monday to work on book.)

What I wish I had in my hand instead of my iBook: chocolate

A special thank you to my friends Sue and L'rae. Each took my darling Rose for a morning this week giving me extra time to write. Thank you! Thank you! I just love playdates.

And for those Invasion fans out there. Thanks to everyone who signed the petition. It's got over 10K signatures! I don't know if it will make a difference but it can't hurt.

Oh, and I almost forgot... Invasion rocked on Wednesday night! (I hope I didn't already blog about this.) The finale had me on my feet the first ten minutes. Talk about gripping television. It was amazing. When they carried Rose away, my heart was pounding so fast. The last five minutes I was on my feet again talking to the TV. My hubby definitely thought I'd gone over the edge. But Larkin???? I can't believe Tom did that. And if we don't find out what happened... No, I won't even go there.

Wednesday, May 17, 2006

A plea for help

There is a petition to save Invasion. It might not work, but it can't hurt. I was signature 70-something and now there are over 3000 in just a couple of days. If you watched the show, or even if you didn't, but want to be my friend for life please go to this link and sign the petition:

http://www.petitiononline.com/33030/petition.html

Sorry, I can't figure out how to do hyperlinks on my mac.

Thanks!

As for writing, I plotted out the last three chapters today, and I've been writing. It's very rough, but lots of pages. Too busy writing to do the tally, but I know I'll surpass my 10 new pages goal and be ready for my two shows tonight.

Of course, I'll be waiting for the 10 o'clock hour with a heavy heart. Yes, it's just a television show, but it's been my escape, something to look forward to every Wednesday night. I emailed ABC and got the most ridiculous canned response. A snail letter is next.

Muddling through

Book Tally for Tuesday:

Today's goal: Figure out what happens in the last three chapters and write 10 new pages

Pages written today: I lost a page or two during the revision of Chapter 8, but it's only 4 in the afternoon so there's still time.

Daily new page goal: 10

Pages revised: 20 (Chapter 8)

Pages polished and good to go: 155

Pages left: 46 (though it will probably go longer than 200 pages)

Days until book is due: 6

What I wish I had in my hand instead of a pen: A television guide from September 06 with a listing for Invasion's Season Premiere on the CW or SciFi network.

One week to go

So my book is due next Monday. I hope that means if I email the manuscript by 11:59 pm on Monday night I'll still be on-time!

Mother's Day was great. My six year old painted a flower pot and planted a marigold in it for me. My eight year old made me two cards, unfortunately she couldn't remember where she put them (lots of tears that just broke my heart) though things brightened considerably when I receive a lovely email greeting from her and Americangirl.com. My awesome hubby came through with a cute skirt and top from Nordstrom, too.

Brunch at the winery was fun. The kids ate well, and my parents enjoyed themselves. I managed a nap on the hour plus drive home and then had a few hours to write while hubby took kids for a walk around the lake. To top off a great day, my hubby then made me one of my favorite meals-enchiladas stuffed with goat cheese and covered in a yummy tomatillo sauce.

I watched the final episode of The West Wing. Since I hadn't watched the show in years, I guess I didn't really get the full impact since I had no idea who Santos (Jimmy Smits), the new press secretary and a bunch of other characters were. Plus I have no idea what Toby needed a pardon for. Can someone clue me in about that please?

Of course, I wrote and rewrote. Chapters 6 and 7 to be exact. More romance was needed. I can't remember what well-known, talented author said she kept a sticky note on her computer with the words "It's a romance, stupid" but I think I need to do the same. With trying to bring out the conflict and the looming deadline pressing down on me, I sort of forgot about the romance. Oops. Anyway I'm back on track now. The two chapters come to 46 pages, but one chapter has a whole lot more pages in it than the other. I need to see if I can break them up a little different. I also finished a very rough draft of Chapter 8 and started revising it on paper.

Tally:
Today's goal: Finish chapter 8 and write 10 pages of chapter 9
Pages written today: 0 (but I haven't started writing yet)
Daily new page goal: 10
Pages revised: Up through Chapter 7
Pages polished and good to go: 136
Pages left: 64 (but over half of those have already been roughed out)
Days until book is due: 7
What I wish I had in my hand instead of a glass of water: A chocolate milkshake topped with whip cream and sprinkles

Update: I'm totally and utterly devastated. ABC cancelled INVASION. For real this time, not the time before when it was only off the air for a few weeks. I can't believe it. What am I going to do without my fave show???? WAAAAAAAHHHH!

Pages and more pages

Whatever I caught got worse. Sleeping between coughing fits, trying to write and family stuff wore me out.

I met my daily page goal on Wednesday so I got to watch my two fave shows. I would have watched them anyway, but hey at least I could do so without feeling guilty. LOST was so-so after last weeks episode, but INVASION rocked. The whole WWII concentration camp overtones that were suggested in the previews came true and it was a heart-pounding episode from start to finish. I just wish Russell would stop spending so much time with Mariel and find Larkin and the kids. But kudos to Lewis for saving Dave. And Sheriff Underlay has grown on me. I thought he was the villain, but he's really a victim. Talk about playing a complex character. William Fichtner is great. I really wished I could have fast-forwarded to next Wednesday so I could see what happens, until I remembered I had a book to write.

Since I've been under the weather, I'm not sure where I am story-wise. The rough of Ch. 7 is done. I've been working on scenes that will go in 8 and 9. I've been working on the ending, too. I'd planned for 10 chapters, but it looks as if I'll need 11. I don't know why I don't just plan for 11 chapters since that's how many I usually end up with!

What I need today are pages and more pages. Way more than my goal of 10. Let's hope I can do it.

Tomorrow morning we're having Mother's day brunch in Salem at a winery with my parents and family. All I want for Mother's Day is a few hours of uninterrupted writing time. Though I have a feeling the kidlets will have something else in mind!

I'm definitely on edge from the deadline. I got a Mother's Day email from Fisher-Price and I got a little weepy. Boy, do I need a vacation.

By the way, I never did get around to using my facial and massage gift certificate from last year. Getting sick messed up my entire week. But the expiration date says 5/06 so I'm hoping that means at the end of May! I, like any other mom out there, could really use some pampering at a day spa!

My Mom by Rose

My mom's name is Melissa.

She is 4 years old.

She likes to work on her computer.

My mom is great at working on her computer.

The best thing about my mom is loving her.

I love my mom because I do.

If I could give her anything for Mother's Day I would give her a puzzle.

So the above is what I received from my three year old today. An early Mother's Day Present. On the paper is also a beautiful, multi-colored flower she painted. Anyway, since I'm on deadline and have nothing to say except I wrote 6 pages this morning! YAY for me! But I need to get back to work so I can watch my two fave shows tonight so I thought I'd let my youngest take the stage.

She did great, too. I have a four in my age. I work on my computer (though I hope that's not all she thinks I do and to make sure when the older kids got home from school we head to the backyard to play!) And I love puzzles. Way to go, Rosie!!!! I will keep this forever.

Oh, and I'm bringing back the tally to make sure I keep posting to the blog as the deadline approaches:
Pages written today: 6 (so far)
Daily page goal: 10
Pages revised: Read through first six chapters and made some minor revisions
Pages polished and good to go: 115
Pages left: I have no idea since I didn't write this book in order, but am up to Chapter 7
Days until book is due: 12

Bound to happen

My daughter's First Communion on Saturday was a joyous and wonderful occasion. She beamed during the procession when she got to carry the wreath of flowers to crown the statue of Mary, she practically floated down the aisle when we were asked to bring up the gifts, she glowed when she received communion and she never stopped smiling afterwards.

The dinner was a success. The house looked good. And things went off without a hitch. Note to self-always budget for a personal chef and server when throwing big events. I got to enjoy myself and visit with everyone, including Mackenna's godfather Alan (and my former UAL travel buddy) and his girlfriend, who flew in from the Bay Area for the festivities! Plus my kitchen was totally clean when they left.

Unfortunately two thirds of the way through the dinner, my throat started hurting. I thought it was from all the chatting, but by the time everyone had left, it hurt to swallow. I wasn't about to let a sore throat knock me out. I had gotten up at 6 am that morning and written 3 pages in the hour before the kids woke up. I still had more to write so I got my iBook out and wrote until midnight.

The next day I slept in until 9 am. Unheard of in the McClone household, but the kids were worn out from the night. It was great. Except when I woke up, I still couldn't swallow, but I was coughing, too. Today I lost my voice. So much for my self-imposed twelve o'clock bedtime to keep me from wearing myself out. But I will not give up. I'll figure a way to keep going even though my bed seems to be calling to me 24/7.

Because even though I'm sick, the story, like my bed, is calling to me. It's taken awhile to warm up to my characters, Jared and Kate, but they have really grown on me and I feel like I'm hitting my stride. A little late, I'll admit, but when you're a mom with three kidlets who've had their share of the sickies this year, you take what you can get. And you often lose writing time. Sometimes, as in my case the last couple of months, all of it.

The next couple of weeks will be killer. I'll do my best to make the May 22nd deadline, but I won't turn in a book that's not good enough, and if it's not, I'll need to ask for more time. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. (Miracles do happen!) But hey if it does, there are worse things than asking for an extension. The three kids could catch what I have!

TGIF

I managed to clean the playroom last night and finish my chapter. I even made it to bed before midnight. I was feeling good about my progress both with the house and book. But when I woke up this morning, I felt as if something was wrong. During my shower the tiny suspicion crystallized into what I realized was a huge problem with my book.

I didn't motivate a huge point on my hero's emotional arc. I went from point A to Z without any of the steps that would show the reader why he was going to take this huge step.

So today I've been going back and trying to figure out what scenes I need to put in so this make sense. The bad thing is now I have an uncompleted Chapter 6 with only have 1 and 1/2 scenes, not three. The good thing is I can take the other 1 1/2 scenes and move them to Chapter 7. So all is not lost. That's where I'll be next week! So stay tuned;)

For all you writers out there, I don't no about you, but if I ever had an office outside of my house, I'd have to have a shower installed. That's where I do my best writing. I step under the spray of hot water and poof... My writer brain kicks into high gear. Ideas turn into books. Characters come alive. Solutions to plot problems materialize. The only problem is getting the stuff I come up with written down before I forget it. Too bad there wasn't a water proof Mac or Alphasmart. That's what I really need.

Yay antibiotics!

Okay, it may sound horrible, but I'm actually happy to be putting my youngest on antibiotics for an ear infection. She'll be better by Saturday (eldest daughter's big day), I won't have to call every guest and tell them my youngest is sick and I might actually be able to get something done tomorrow. My worst fear was that it was another one of those fever viruses that lasts for a week and will spread to the other kids and pretty much ruin everything we've been planning for months. Thank goodness it was only an ear infection!

As for what's been going on beside taking care of the sick kidlet:

I watched LOST. Oh my... the last few minutes blew me away. I wondered about Michael, but I never thought he would shoot Ana Lucia and Libby. I cannot wait for next week. And it really makes me wonder who these Others are and what is Henry's role with them.

I also watched INVASION. It was great, as usual. The tension keeps racheting up and now that sweeps are here things are going to explode. If you haven't seen this show yet, check it out. It's really, really good. I just love Dave, the conspiracy theorist, and Russell is a pretty nice piece of eye candy.

My mother in law arrived today. We haven't seen her since Rose's baptism 2003 so the kids are pretty excited that Grammy is here for a visit.

I rewrote an entire scene last night and wrote a new scene today. All I need is one more scene tonight to have another chapter completed.

I paid a visit to author Brenda Novak's on-line auction to raise funds for diabetes research and bid on a couple of items. A good friend of mine's 4 year old son, Nick, was just diagnosed with diabetes a couple of weeks ago. If anyone feels like supporting a good cause, check out: http://www.brendanovak.com/auction_index.php

Nooooooo!

I can't believe it. My youngest is sick. Again.

I don't know where all these illnesses are coming from. New germ pool since we moved? I just don't understand. We've had a horrible winter. I was sure spring would be better, but now...

It started yesterday when her runny nose turned this thick greenish color. Last night we put her to bed and an hour later it sounded as if a seal had invaded the upstairs. She had the most horrible croupy cough imaginable. Needless to say it was a long night with time spent outside to help her breath, lots of tossing and turning and then a wake up at 2 am when she was ready to start her day. I get the majority of my writing done after 8:30 pm. So last night was pretty much a wash.

Of course this means no school for her. She goes twice a week for 2 1/2 hours. And no writing for me. At least not until naptime.

The deadline in looming. I have no idea how I will get this book finished in time, and I'm craving chocolate. I wish I could wake up on May 23 and have it all done.

In denial

I spent yesterday morning thinking it was the first of March. Pretending is probably a better word. But hey, it worked. I managed to get the kids to school on-time, have an enjoyable couple of hours and not think of the book. And then I got an RSVP to the upcoming first communion dinner and reality came crashing back. May 1, not March 1. I don't have two and half months to write my book. I have three weeks left. The first communion dinner is now up to 42 guests, and it's this Saturday. And we won't even talk about how much work I have to do around the house by then.

Panicked? You bet.

Overwhelmed? You can't imagine.

I'm making myself go to bed by midnight this week. I can't afford to get sick before Saturday. Come Sunday, the late nights will begin. I'm just praying the pages follow!

Last Mother's Day, my husband gave me a gift certificate for a facial and massage. I've yet to use it. Somehow I need to squeeze that in, too, or it will expire. That would be a pretty pathetic statement of my life if I let that happen.

And on top of everything, I'm on a diet. No gluten. No sugar. No chocolate. A deadline with no chocolate. I truly am a masochist.

X marks the spot

Today we celebrated my son's 6th birthday at Adventure Studios in Vancouver. All three kidlets put on their pirate costumes and we set off to see if this pirate party place I'd found via craigslist was going to match all the hype I'd been giving it for weeks. Months, actually.

This morning I had a moment of panic when I realized I'd given out all the invitations and didn't have directions. I typed in their website, howbravedoyoufeel.com, but the only thing that came up was a Network Solutions page saying the domain name was expiring. I do believe my breath caught in my throat. (A cliched heroine reaction that I still use because in some cases it does work and as I proved today actually can happen.) I used google to get the phone number all the while trying to figure out what I would do with almost 20 kids at the last minute if they were no longer in business.

Needless to say, my worries were completely unfounded. The place was awesome, so much better than I expected. Even the hubby was impressed and didn't hesitate when I asked for cash to tip them. (This after I'd had to give him a complete breakdown of what this party was going to cost us a few hours earlier.)

The kids (16 boys and 3 girls) had so much fun. They laughed, screamed and played along with the entertaining and funny pirates and the puppets. There was only one really scary moment-darkness, a fog machine and secret passage way-but we managed to get the two kids somewhat frightened by the situation through it. And the reward was worth it: giggle grog, cake and ice cream.

The best part was all I had to do was mail out the invitations they provided, get favors (optional actually since they give a bandana, eye patch, gold coin and puppet to each child) and show up on town. The pirates, bless their scurvy hearts, took care of everything else. Exactly the kind of party this mommy on deadline needed.

It's after ten now. My three little pirates and my one big pirate are tuckered out and hit the bunks early tonight. Too much swaggering and treasure hunting. I'm halfway to my page goal and at this rate, I may make it before midnight!!! Now that will be something to celebrate and worth of a toast with giggle grog.

And the murderer is...

Tonight, my hubby and I attended a murder mystery party. It was a dinner party with two other couples. Each of us played a character. I was Marilyn Merlot (the theme was wine and murder) who is a Oscar nominated actress who hasn't returned to the wine country in five years. I wore a sequined dress, tiara, feather boa and heels. I even put on make-up. Second time this month! It was a great time. Good food and conversation and the best part was I guessed the murderer!!! I even figured out the motive. Yes, being a writer comes in handy when you least expect it!

So tomorrow's the big birthday party. My son's actual birthday was Friday, but with T-ball (I was the asst. coach this morning!), I didn't want any games to interfere with the party to I scheduled the party for Sunday.

I must pay tribute to an amazing godfather. One of my closest friends, Alex, is my son Finn's godfather. Alex has never missed sending a birthday or Christmas present. Ever. This isn't why we chose him as a godfather. I knew if something happened to us, Alex would be there (even long distance) to make sure Finn was being raised Catholic. But still this whole never forgetting thing (and having presents arrive on time) is quite an amazing feat. Most guys, my hubby included, just aren't that on top of things. I was sure, however, that this birthday would be different. Afterall, Alex and his wife had just welcomed twins, a beautiful boy and girl, to their family a few short weeks ago. Of course, a package arrived Friday. FedEx. For Finn. Of course, I feel like a total slackard since I don't have two newborns to feed and care for, yet I still haven't manage to get their baby gifts in the mail. It's horrible I know. I'm moving that task to the top of my To Do list! Which means maybe I'll have it done by June or July.

Okay, I'm too tired and have had too many glasses of wine tonight to write anymore. Sweet dreams!

Peace and quiet

It's just me and the three cats this afternoon. The hubby is doing bus driver service so I have some time to write. I'm behind on the book. Nothing new. I'm always behind with writing, the To Do list, you name it. I don't want to tell you how many pages I must write every day between now and the 22nd of May because seeing it in print might just push me over the edge.

But write I will. And I may just get it done!

Unfortunately I keep making more work for myself outside of writing. Thinking I was being smart and efficient, I ordered party favors on-line for my son's birthday. You could only see the items, not how they came packaged, but they looked cute and I couldn't have put together a favor bag at the Dollar Store for less money. Imagine my surprise when a huge carton showed up. (Huge as in all three kids could play inside it at the same time.) What looked like a "little" pirate playset actually came packaged in a big, present-size box (approx. 10" x 24"). No way could I give those out as favors. Too big, too excessive, too expensive looking. I thought about sending them back, but my son was with me when I opened the box and loves them so now I'm stuck giving those out. I finally came up with a solution. The playsets are much smaller than the packaging so I'm taking each set out of the box, discarding the packaging and putting the pieces into goodie bags.

With all the writing I need to do I was thrilled to hear about a woman selling the secret to writing a romance novel. For $197, she'll tell you everything you need to know. I was tempted. I'd love to know the secret to writing a romance novel as well as the secret handshake to the published authors club. Eleven books sold, and I still don't know either one!

Drumroll, please...

We have a winner! A muse for my new book--Tom Welling. I have no idea who this guy is (an actor, I know that much), but according to his bio on imdb.com he fits all my criteria for my new hero and then some!

A big thanks to Lissa! And to Tori, too, since Jeremy was pretty close to what I was looking for and you concurred with the Tom Welling suggestion. Both of you may choose any book from my backlist or you can wait for the one coming out this fall. Just email me with your book choice and address and if you want the autograph personalized or generic. I just unpacked my office so I actually know where all my books are at the moment!

Sorry for not posting much this week. It's spring break and a stomach virus has taken out the kidlets one of the time. Today everyone seemed well so we went to the zoo. They had to do at least one fun thing during the week! Now hubby's taken them for the rest of the afternoon and evening so I can take a quick nap and then get to work on the book.

Happy Easter!

Hope everyone had a wonderful day! We were asked to take up the gifts at Mass and this thrilled my oldest. She's really looking forward to her First Communion in a couple of weeks. The kids had a fun egghunt and loved their Easter baskets. We had our first dinner on our brand new table. I even cooked the meal! My hubby does most of the cooking around here. We also welcomed a new nephew this morning! Congrats to Pat and Mary on the new addition to the family! We can't wait to meet him!

On the writing front, my editor liked the revisions I did on the proposal and I've been busily writing, writing, writing. I checked out Tori's suggestion for a new muse, and though he's very attractive, he's sadly just not the one. The search continues!

I need a hero!

Actually I need a muse. A new one. Hayden Christensen was great and did wonders for PLAIN JANE'S PRINCE CHARMING, but he's just not working for this new book, MARRIAGE FOR BABY.

My new hero, Jared Reed, is gorgeous and a really good guy who has a few things to learn when it comes to keeping the love of his life, Kate Malone, in his life. Unfortunately I can't picture him, and now with two sick kids and a bored 3 year old at home, searching the internet and magazines to find him isn't going to happen. More often than not, my muse finds me, but I'm running out of time and feeling a bit desperate at the moment. So if you see a guy who resembles the following description, please send him my way. It would be much appreciated!

* Over 6 feet tall
* Athletic build
* Brown wavy hair worn in carefree style
* Square jaw, slightly crooked nose (snowboarding accident as teen), long eyelashes, lush lips

Writing a book

Back in September/October, I wrote a book in six weeks with my last deadline. I love how the book turned out, but the process just about did me in physically and mentally. I really don't want to go through that again.

So now I have another deadline coming up--May 22nd. I have the first three chapters completed (55 pages) and 8 pages of chapter four done. I'm trying to figure out how to get the rest of the book written this time around, on time. Upcoming events that I must take into consideration: school auction (about 2-4 more hours of work to do for it), kid's Irish dance recital, son's birthday, daughter's first communion and Mother's day.

Here are my options:
1) Write the way I always do which is hit or miss on a day to day basis (this will get the job done, but I pay the price-see above)
2) Be disciplined and set a daily page goal that needs to be done before I go to bed each night. (Doesn't take into account sick kids-I have one at home with me right now, emergencies that come up or my procrastination which could make for late nights.)
3) Write a rough (aka crap) draft as fast as I can with a set date to have the complete done then give myself a certain number of weeks to polish. (This gives me two deadlines! Yikes!)

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Happy Anniversary!

Eleven years ago today, I got married. It was a beautiful ceremony in Babylon, NY and a lovely reception in Stoney Brook, NY. My best friends flew in from the Bay Area, Guatemala, London, Spokane and So. Cal. and it was so much fun. Tonight we're going to watch the video of the ceremony with the kids. Well, I will with the two girls since the males in this family gave up television for Lent!

Anniversaries used to be a big deal. Then we had kids. I can't remember doing something just the two of us on our actual anniversary date. We always plan something for another, more convenient date. This year we're planning to celebrate next weekend with a night away from the kids. I bought a brand new dress yesterday complete with shoes, necklace, earrings and bracelet.

So how did we spend today? Well, it hasn't been the most romantic of days. Our youngest woke us up at 6 am when she had to go potty. Unfortunately she'd already gone potty, in bed (long showers before bedtime are not a good idea!), so that meant she got to get into our bed. My dad showed up a little after 8 am to help my hubby put up the fence in our backyard. Then our oldest complained of a headache. I kissed her forehead and she was burning up so it was off to the doctors to make sure the strep wasn't back. It wasn't thank goodness. While my hubby built the fence outside, I sat on the couch with my sick little girl picking out her first communion invitation and favors.

But I really shouldn't complain. Only one kidlet is sick, not three. My proposal made it to London finally! And I'm married to the greatest guy in the world.

Stuck on a bridge at 1 AM

No, that isn't a lyric from a country and western song. It's where I was last night on my way home from Emmanuel Hospital with one of the kidlets in the back seat. I guess a ship decided that was the perfect time to cruise the Columbia so the bridge was raised to let it pass. You'd think my little one would be as exhausted as I was, but no, she was content to sing along with her Barbie Princess and the Pauper CD.

So this morning instead of working on the proposal-that-will-probably-never-be-finished, I will be at the doctors hoping when they remove the splint on my three year olds arm that she can move it and not be in excruciating pain. If that happens, that means it was a nursemaid's elbow (dislocated) that she suffered. Otherwise it means more X-rays and a trip to an orthopedic doc. Please, oh, please, let it be the nursemaid's elbow.

Here's the running tally for this week:

Strep throat - 3 kidlets
UTI - 1 kidlet
Injured arm - 1 kidlet

Unfortunately it's one kidlet with three of the above. I hope one day we can all laugh about this!

Hat Trick

One, two, three. All of my kidlets now have strep. Hubby asked how the proposal was coming when he got home from work. My answer: "What proposal?"

Monday, March 20, 2006

Strep on, strep two...

So two of my kidlets have strep throat. The same two who had it a couple of weeks ago. Now the entire family must be tested to see if one of us is a carrier. It's always something.

Still I must finish the proposal. It's still not done and the book (the complete book) is due May 22nd. If I continue this way, I'll be back to writing the darn thing is six weeks like I did with PLAIN JANE. I really don't want to do that again. I think I swore I would never do that again. But then again, I swore I'd never have a deadline during Jan, Feb or March due to the kids getting sick every year. Oh, well. I better write that down in my planner next year!

St. Patrick performances went well for my dancer lass. The sore throat didn't hit until last night. I just hope we didn't infect the entire dance troupe! Or her first communion classmates last night.

On a positive note, I've now exercised twice in the last two days. I walked yesterday and did a Kickboxing/Tai chi class this morning. My goal is to do some sort of exercise each and every day!

Oh, and I found out Invasion will be back in April. Thank goodness since I love that show. To protest it going off for a few weeks, however, ABC is losing this viewer at 10 o'clock pm. I'll be watching Heist on NBC instead of Evidence. Heist stars the guy who played Prince Henry in Ever After with Drew Barrymore. I still like watching that movie. ::sigh::

Okay, both the girls are asleep. Time to get writing!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sunshine warm upon your face.
And the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His Hand.

Today is a big day around the McClone household. Early this am, a sneaky leprechaun paid a visit to the kidlets. Since all three gave up candy for Lent, the little guy left them shamrock shaped straws instead of chocolate gold coins. Unfortunately a night of playing board and card games was too much fun to stop to make our annual leprechaun trap (we still haven't caught one yet!) but there's always next year.

With our little Irish dancers, we're experiencing something new this year--performances! Mackenna has danced at events on her own before, but yesterday she danced at a retirement home with her dance school. Even though she thought they were doing the Light Jig instead of the Single Jig for one of the dances, she loved every minute of it! She'll be dancing again today and on Sunday. She's really loving being part of a group and dancing. Plus I'm guessing she thinks it's pretty cool to get out of school so she can dance. I know I would.

A couple of you (possibly the only ones reading this!) emailed me about my snow weekend in Bend. A little late, but here goes... We had a wonderful time up until Sunday morning when we were sledding. I took a step and one foot sunk two feet into an air pocket. That was enough to mess up my back. I spent three days in pain, had to ask for an extension on my proposal revision (still working on those!) and fell even further behind on stuff. But I'm slowly climbing out of the pit of overwhelmdom. And that's a good thing since I'll be entering deadline Hell as soon as the proposal is off.

Bend it!

Thanks to our wonderful friends, Tiffany and Nick, who offered us the use of their beautiful house, we are spending the weekend in Bend, Oregon. Bend is a charming town on the way to Mt. Bachelor. We arrived yesterday afternoon and rented the kids and Tom skis at the Powderhouse. The great staff there provided us a map to the town and directions to the Bend Brewing Company where we ate a yummy dinner. Hubby was impressed by his pint of Poor Richard Brew. It was too heavy and dark for me, but I enjoyed my pint of Golden Metolius. And the kids gobbled up their pizza and fries.

Right now hubby and the two older kidlets are up at Mt. Bachelor. Unfortunately our youngest came down with strep throat on Wednesday and even though she's no longer contagious, sticking her into child care at the slope (or anywhere!) is difficult enough when she's feeling great so we decided not to push it this time. Next year she'll be old enough for ski school and I'll be able to get my fill of downhill. Finally! I've been waiting for this for a long time. When I was in my twenties and living in Arizona, I thought nothing of driving to Telluride, CO, to ski for a couple of days then driving home on Sunday after skiing all day and be at my desk, bright and cheery and a little sunburned, come Monday morning.

So I'm going to enjoy the snow with her, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and try to get some writing done. I let Rosie pick her favorite DVDs and I packed our little portable player. She's watching Barbie's Princess & the Pauper as I type. It's going to be a nice and relaxing day for both of us!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Since hubby doesn't want pictures of our kidlets on the internet, I thought I'd let our three furbabies wish you Happy Valentine's instead.

The gray one is Spirt. She's a neurotic kitty with a heart of gold.

Rocket is our big boy kitty. He's big, furry and a real love. He sleeps right next to me and is more dog than cat.

Smalls came with our old house. She decided she liked it better than her new one. But we decided to bring her with us when we moved. She's adjusted well to being an indoor kitty!

Hope your day is full of hearts, romance and love!

In mourning

I can't believe it. ABC cancelled Invasion! One of the only two shows I watch on television. I'm so upset. If you watched the show, or even if you didn't and want to do me a favor, go here http://www.savemyshow.com/shows/invasion.htm and vote yes. Who knows if it will make a difference or not, but I had to do something.

Sorry I haven't posted. I've been working on my new book Marriage for Baby and doing a bunch of other stuff such as...

My youngest turned 3. It's been hard saying goodbye to her toddlerhood. She wants to be a big girl now, and I want her to be my little girl. We're also dealing with where to send her in September for preschool.

I'm learning all about the politics of Irish dance. It isn't pretty. And I think there may be a story there somewhere. Or a lawsuit.

I took the older two kids to see The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe on Sunday. Loved it! We are now reading from the book each night and will make our way through the entire series.

Had my first instance of a seller not sending me the item I purchased on eBay. I tried to contact him for weeks. Amazingly enough as soon as I filed a complaint with Paypal I heard from him. Supposedly the item is on its way. We'll see!

Oh, and if any of you live in the Portland Metro area and don't have plans for Valentine's Day, might I suggest the Expressions of Chocolate event at the Schnitz. My friend, Shelley Jackson, is organizing it to raise money for CCA (Children's Cancer). I'll be there! And so will Bernard C's, my fave chocolatier! Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. You can find out more about the fantastic event at www.expressionsofchocolate.com.

Happy New Year!

It's 2006. Where has the time gone? I've spent a lot of the last week in bed trying to recover from a horrible cold. My parents had the kids last night, but I didn't feel well enough to attend a party we'd been invited to. Instead we stayed home, watched Holiday Inn on DVD and drank champagne at 9:00 pm after we watched the ball drop in NY. Is this what being middle-aged means?

On the writing front, it took several games of Sudoko yesterday for things to percolate in my stuffed up head so I could figure out what was wrong with my story. But now I know and have started rewriting the entire proposal this morning. Unfortunately, I must start over. That's what I get for trying to unpack, get ready for Christmas, take care of sick kids and write all at the same time. Now to get three chapters and a synopsis written by the 13th.

New Year's resolutions:

1) Write everyday
2) Exercise regularly
3) Lose weight
4) Keep in better touch with friends
5) Be more patient with kids

I'm sure I'll think of more! What are your resolutions for 2006?
